Monserrato among churches, museums and Campidano architecture

Town centre with Campidano architecture

In the old town centre of Monserrato, typical Campidano houses made of adobe bricks and tuff stone have been preserved. Wide loggias and carved wooden portals characterise these buildings. The Casa della Cultura, a building dating from the last decade of the 19th century, is also located in the town centre. Its large inner courtyard features a typical element of Campidano house architecture. There is a bunker in the courtyard, recalling the building’s use as an air-raid shelter during the Second World War. The Casa della Cultura also houses a theatre and the municipal music school.

Churches and religious buildings

The Parrocchia di Sant'Ambrogio is a Gothic-Catalan church dating from between the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It has three naves; in the broad, high central nave, several pillars join to form pointed arches. The Chiesa Santa Maria Vergine has a Greek-cross floor plan and a central dome dating from the 19th century. There have been records about this church since the 12th century. Its changing status is important for your planning: the Chiesa Santa Maria Vergine is normally closed and reopens in September for the celebrations held in its honour.

The Chiesetta di San Valeriano was intended to serve as the private chapel of the Spiga family, who had it built on their own property opposite the manor house. The foundation stone was laid on 24 October 1906 by Pietro Balestra, Archbishop of Cagliari, and the chapel was consecrated on 5 May 1910. Its marble altar houses a statue of Saint Valerian. The Chiesetta also contains a statue of Saint Lawrence and the cart used to transport it. The Parrocchia del Santissimo Redentore was inaugurated on 29 June 1970. It includes a 26-metre-high bell tower with a square floor plan and working bells. The Monumento al Santissimo Redentore was erected on the occasion of the Holy Year 1900 under Pope Leo XIII.

Other buildings and festival culture

The Monument Sa Cruxi 'e marmuri dates from 1550 and is associated with the historic site of executions. On the side facing the Piazzetta, it bears an image of Christ; on the opposite side, an image of the Madonna with the Child Jesus. The festivals also preserve special local connections: the San Sebastiano festival in Monserrato ends with the great bonfire “Su fogadoni de santu Sebastianu”. “Sa festa de sa binnenna” includes a parade of floats decorated with equipment from the world of grape harvesting. “Su fordallinu” was the term used in Monserrato for the festive dress of wealthy female landowners.

Museums of traditional dress and railways

The Museo Sardo di Antropologia ed Etnografia is located in the Cittadella Universitaria di Monserrato and displays traditional Sardinian costumes as well as ethnographic objects. Railway history is the focus of the Museo delle Ferrovie della Sardegna. The museum reopened to the public on 26 June 2025 at the ARST railway station on Via Pompeo in Monserrato. It occupies two vaulted buildings covering more than 1,000 m² and displays historic railway vehicles as well as original memorabilia.

Playgrounds and green spaces

The Parco Magico on Via dell’Argine is Monserrato’s first explicitly inclusive playground. Most of the play equipment there is intended for children aged 2 to 11. The Parco comunale Generale Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa is a green space with outdoor fitness equipment and games for children. This gives families in Monserrato a range of options for spending time together and staying active.
