Nurri lies at an altitude of about 600 metres on the crater rim of an extinct volcano. The hills around the town are characterised by Mediterranean maquis as well as holm oaks, downy oaks and cork oaks. The slopes descend to the shores of the two artificial lakes, Flumendosa and Mulargia. In Nurri, a striking elevation, wooded Mediterranean landscapes and expansive bodies of water thus come together.

Lake Landscape and Activities

The lakes near Nurri provide a habitat for herons, ducks, mallards and kingfishers. Their waters attract sport-fishing enthusiasts. Boat trips on Lago Medio del Flumendosa are associated with Nurri, while canoeing on Lago Mulargia is considered a possible activity. These different water-based experiences complement the town's scenic appeal with peaceful opportunities for observation and active leisure pursuits.

Archaeological Heritage around Nurri

The Sardajara archaeological site lies in the historic centre, within Nurri's built-up area. The monument consists of two towers connected by a curtain wall. The Parco Sardajara visitor centre offers a multisensory tour conveying aspects of life in the Nuragic period. Guided visits to the Sardajara area are available by prior reservation. The Domus de Janas di Frissas also forms part of the Nurri area.

Further evidence of the town's long history includes Nuraghe Su Pizzu de Is Cangialis, a rare example of a nuraghe with a five-lobed floor plan, and Nuraghe Corongiu 'e Maria near Lago Medio Flumendosa. Nuraghe Santu Perdu lies near the small church of the same name. The remains of the ancient Roman city of Biora are also part of Nurri's historical heritage. Those interested in prehistoric and protohistoric architectural forms as well as Roman traces will encounter several different historical layers here.

Churches and Local Architecture

San Michele Arcangelo is a 16th-century parish church in the Catalan Gothic style, with a Greek-cross floor plan. Its bell tower stands separately from the church and has a terracotta portal. Santa Rosa da Viterbo is a church dating from the mid-17th century, attached to the Capuchin monastery. The rural hermitage of Sant'Antonio da Padova was built in the 17th century. Together with the nuraghi, these religious and defensive buildings reveal Nurri's various historical layers.
