Ballao between the Flumendosa and Sardinian history

Ballao combines the Flumendosa with archaeological evidence, an industrial past and traditional festivals. This creates a destination where you can explore nature, history and everyday Sardinian culture through specific places and customs.

The Flumendosa and the surrounding mountains

In the Ballao area, the Flumendosa flows along a stretch of approximately 9 km. Between Goni and Ballao, the river forms deep pools rich in fish, which are connected to Ballao’s river culture. The Flumendosa is therefore not merely a landscape feature but also has a direct cultural connection with the town.

The mountains of Perda is Furonis and Monte Cardiga are located around Ballao. The wider region also includes Monte sa Colla and Monte Genis.

Archaeology, mining and built heritage

Funtana Coberta is a Nuragic sacred well associated with the water cult. The site was probably built during the Late Bronze Age, from 1350 to 1150 BC, and was already in use during the Middle Bronze Age, from 1800 to 1350 BC. The Centro Do.S.A. is housed in a farm building constructed at the end of the 19th century.

The former Corti Rosas antimony mine is part of Sardinia’s UNESCO-recognized Geomining, Historical and Environmental Park. It preserves the remains of a processing plant, a flotation plant and a building for the electric generator. Buildings from the former accommodation facilities and residential buildings are also included.

From Ballao, you can reach the Corti Rosas mine via the road to Escalaplano, taking a turnoff shortly after the bridge over the Flumendosa.

Festivals with a religious and communal character

The Festa di Santa Maria Nuraxi, also known as Santa Maria Cleofe, is celebrated in Ballao on Easter Monday. The festival includes a religious procession to a Byzantine rural church, a communal lunch, as well as traditional singing and dancing. The chapel is located approximately 4 km from the town center in the mountain area on the border with the municipality of Silius.

Another regular date is Su Fogadoni on January 16. The festival is held in honor of Saint Anthony the Abbot with a large bonfire. Singing and dancing, red wine, cooked broad beans and traditional pastries are part of the celebrations.

Ancient sites around Ballao include Nuraghe Arrubiu. The wider region also contains the Sito Archeologico Nuragi Longu and Castello di Quirra, a castle. The Punto panoramico di Bruncu Mogumu viewpoint is also located in the wider Ballao region.
