Discover Sitò: Culture, Coast and Nature in Castiadas

For planning your trip to Sitò and Castiadas, several different perspectives are available: the Museo del Territorio, nuraghi and historic sites lead into the past, while forests, beaches, paths and a riding stable reveal other facets of your stay.

History and Nuraghi

The Museo del Territorio of Castiadas is housed in the wing of the former penal colony’s directorate, which was built in 1877. The municipal area is also home to the Church of San Basilide of the former penal colony, which was built by prisoners at the end of the 19th century. The historic cemetery lies about 500 metres north of the director’s villa of the former penal colony.

In the northern part of the municipality of Castiadas, the megalithic complex of Cuili Piras comprises burial structures and a total of 53 menhirs. The S’Omu ‘e S’Orcu nuraghe has three towers around a central tower, as well as an enclosing wall with five surviving towers. A signposted path leads to this nuraghe from the SP 18; the stated walking distance is 250 metres.

Forest, Paths and Panoramic Views

The forest of Castiadas lies within the Sarrabus Site of Community Importance (SCI). The highest elevation at Minni Minni can be reached on guided tours, by mountain bike and on foot. From Minni Minni, there is a view across the entire area of Castiadas.

For hiking, the Settefratelli area is also part of the regional experience area: the Sentiero Italia runs there as Trail No. 800. Together with the options at Minni Minni, this provides a choice between guided exploration, cycling and walking, without implying that these activities are equivalent.

Beaches on the Coast

Cala Pira is a 400-metre-long beach of fine white sand with turquoise water and emerald-green hues. A 16th-century watchtower stands on the northern headland of Cala Pira. This coastal area therefore combines a beach landscape with a clearly recognisable historic structure.

Santa Giusta has a beach about one kilometre long. Marina di San Pietro has more than three kilometres of fine golden sandy beach. Cala Sinzias offers a parking area equipped for motorhomes and two campsites in front of the beach. About one mile from Cala Sinzias beach, a Roman ship sank in the 1st century AD.

Horses and First Riding Experiences

At Centro Equestre Il Falco, children can pet the horses and the donkey at the riding stable. They can also gain their first riding experience there. The two options thus range from direct contact with the animals to first riding experiences.
