Archaeology and Maritime History
The Museo Archeologico Comunale di Villasimius presents finds from archaeological excavations on land and underwater, focusing on ancient trade routes and shipwrecks. The museum also includes a themed exhibition area dedicated to the sea.
Historical traces can also be found outside the museum. The lighthouse on Isola dei Cavoli was built in 1858 on an old Aragonese defensive tower. The island can be reached by private boat or on organised excursions from the port of Villasimius. At the entrance to present-day Villasimius stands Casa Todde, an old manor house built in the second half of the 19th century. Another maritime highlight is the Feast of Madonna del Naufrago, which takes place every year at the end of July and includes a procession on the sea.
Coast, Wetland and Marine Conservation
The natural side of Villasimius is particularly evident at Stagno di Notteri on Porto Giunco beach. The wetland is a place where pink flamingos are frequently found. The Capo Carbonara marine protected area extends from Cala Pisano to Punta Is Proceddus.
In the coastal area of Villasimius, an initiative offers guided tours, environmental education, nature-focused information and environmental interpretation at the CEAS visitor centre of the marine protected area at the tourist port of Villasimius. In the Capo Carbonara marine protected area, boat hire and boat rentals are available in connection with excursions.
Exploring Trails and Historical Sites
Villasimius can also be explored by mountain bike. There are routes on unpaved trails leading through landscapes such as Stagno di Notteri, to Fortezza Vecchia, Cala Caterina and Santo Stefano. The unpaved surface is a specific planning factor when choosing a route and organising an excursion. After the port, an unpaved road leads 100 metres to Fortezza Vecchia.
