History, Museums and Local Character
The Museo civico Casa del Duca is housed in a restored fort dedicated to Carlo Emanuele III. The fort was built in 1738 together with the first buildings of the emerging settlement of Carloforte. At the museum, you can see models of a tuna fishing installation and a 19th-century tuna processing and canning factory. This historical perspective is complemented by a plan of Carloforte’s first district drawn by the engineer Augusto De la Vallée.
The Museo Multimediale Torre San Vittorio uses touchscreens and 3D simulations to present the history of the island of San Pietro, from its geological origins to its settlement in 1738. The visit ends on the tower’s top floor at a viewpoint offering a 360-degree panoramic view. At the Polo Linguistico Tabarchino, a multimedia exhibition explores the Genoese origins of the Tabarchino language and its influences from the Mediterranean region.
Salt Pans, Rock Pinnacles and Paths by the Sea
The salt pans of Carloforte are a Site of Community Importance, or SCI, where some of Sardinia’s most significant avian rarities can be found. La via del sale, a nature trail near the town suitable for birdwatching and jogging, runs around the salt pans. The island of San Pietro is also home to 25 nature trails.
Le Colonne are trachyte rock pinnacles that were declared a natural monument in April 1993. A coastal walk from the La BĂłbba car park leads to Le Colonne. This gives Carloforte a tangible connection to the rocky coastline in addition to the natural features of the salt pans.
Alleyways, Church and Living Tradition
The historic center of Carloforte is crossed by narrow streets and shaded alleyways known locally as caruggi. The Chiesa dei Novelli Innocenti is a late Baroque church on the outskirts of the Carloforte settlement. A distinctive religious tradition is the Festa della Madonna dello Schiavo, held every year on November 15. During the celebration, a procession carrying the image of the Madonna dello Schiavo travels through the town’s streets from the shrine on Via XX Settembre.
Since 1998, the atelier of Oriana Bassani has been located in the heart of the historic center, on Via Venti Settembre. Its offerings include watercolors, oil paintings, portraits of Latin sailing boats, nautical charts, wind roses, and handcrafted maritime objects. The combination of maritime motifs, language, religious buildings, and narrow old-town alleyways gives Carloforte a clearly recognizable local character.
Getting There and Finding Your Way Around
Ferries to Carloforte depart from Portovesme and Calasetta. The crossing takes about 40 minutes from Portovesme and about 30 minutes from Calasetta. In Carloforte, there are several rental outlets for bicycles, scooters, and cars, as well as a basic public transport service operated by ARST.
