Iglesias: Cathedral, Mining History and Landscapes
Accommodation in Iglesias
Iglesias in Sardinia appeals to travellers who want to combine historic buildings, mining history and varied landscapes. The Cattedrale di Santa Chiara and the historic centre are the main highlights; museums, caves, a beach and a viewpoint in the surrounding area complete the picture of the town. The Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara also offers a broader perspective on the history of south-western Sardinia.
Cathedral and historic centre
The Cattedrale di Santa Chiara was built between 1284 and 1288. Its surviving original structural elements illustrate the transition from Romanesque to Gothic forms in a Sardinian interpretation. This makes the building a particularly vivid introduction to the island’s architectural history, without requiring you to rely on abstract period terms.
The bell tower of the Cattedrale di Santa Chiara preserves a bronze bell dated 1337 and signed by Andrea Pisano. Another historical trace is formed by the walls known as the “Pisan walls”, which surround the historic centre of Iglesias.
Mining history as a trail and exhibition
The Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara is a 500-kilometre trail that runs through south-western Sardinia in 30 stages. As a historic, cultural and religious trail, it passes through the Sardinian Geomining Park along old mining paths in south-western Sardinia. With 500 kilometres and 30 stages, the Cammino is an extensive trail project; for travel planning, alongside the historic centre of Iglesias, it represents a separate focus extending across several stages.
Porto Flavia is also part of this historical context: the facility was used as a loading terminal to load heavy minerals directly onto ships at sea. The facility’s former function shifts the focus from extraction to the maritime onward transport of the minerals. Its use shows how closely mining history and the coast were historically connected in this part of Sardinia.
Museums in the surrounding area
The Museo dell'Arte Mineraria is a museum located in the surrounding area of Iglesias. The Museo Diocesano is also located in the surrounding area of Iglesias and preserves a large part of the so-called cathedral treasury, meaning particularly valuable sacred objects belonging to the cathedral. The Miniera di Monteponi is also a museum located in the surrounding area of Iglesias.
Caves, beaches and viewpoints
The Passeggiata panoramica di Nebida is a viewpoint located in the area surrounding Iglesias. The Grotta di Santa Barbara is a cave located in the surrounding area of Iglesias, while the Grotta San Giovanni is a cave located in the area surrounding Iglesias.
