Gonnesa between sandy coast and mining history

Those who choose Gonnesa for a trip to Italy encounter two clearly recognisable themes: the coast of Marina di Gonnesa and the history of mining. The combination of landscape, birdwatching, Nuragic culture and industrial heritage gives the town an appeal for a range of interests. At the same time, the individual experiences remain clearly distinguishable – from a long sandy beach to museums and historic sites.

Beaches, coast and birdwatching

The coast of Marina di Gonnesa consists of a four-kilometre-long sandy beach. Four sections divide it; access points are located at Porto Paglia, Punt’e s’Arena, Plag’e mesu and Fontanamare. The three most important beaches in Gonnesa include Fontanamare, Spiaggia di Mezzo and Porto Paglia. They have ample parking and service facilities.

The coastal landscape includes the Sa-Masa marsh near the beaches of Gonnesa. It is used for birdwatching and is home to rare waterfowl. The Grotta di Santa Barbara cave is located in the vicinity of Gonnesa. Spiaggia Fontanamare beach is also nearby; Spiaggia di Acqua Sa Canna beach is located in the Gonnesa area.

Getting there and finding your way around

Gonnesa can be reached from Cagliari by train to Iglesias and then by bus to Gonnesa. The Gonnesa information point provides guidance on sights in Gonnesa and the surrounding areas. It also provides information on public services, economic activities, means of transport and events in the summer calendar.

Nuraghi and traces of mining

A particular focus is the Seruci Nuragic complex. It includes defensive walls and towers, a giants’ tomb and a village with more than one hundred huts, and extends over six hectares. Tours of the Seruci Nuragic complex can be booked by phone or WhatsApp at +39 3773968844. Visitors interested in Nuragic culture can therefore enjoy a clearly defined experience.

The history of mining can also be traced at specific sites. The historic Villaggio Normann was built as a residential settlement for the director and employees of the San Giovanni mine, near the mining site named after the engineer Edward Normann. In Funtanamare, the outlet of the drainage tunnel dating from 1875 has been preserved; it is known as Umberto I.

This provides several specific museum destinations for a culturally and historically focused trip, alongside the historic sites.
