Portoscuso among coastal towers, the tuna fishery and southwest Sardinia
Accommodation in Portoscuso
Portoscuso combines Sardinia’s maritime history, distinctive coastal landscapes and routes into the mining history of Sulcis on the island’s southwest coast. The town therefore appeals to different interests: you can admire historic buildings, explore coves and cliffs, plan a challenging hiking stage or experience local festival culture.

Coastal Towers and Maritime History
The 16th-century Torre Spagnola stands between Cala della Ghinghetta and the built-up center of Portoscuso. From this strategically located tower, the coastal towers of Calasetta and Carloforte can be observed. In this way, coastal orientation is combined with a tangible view of the area’s maritime history.
The Tonnara di Portoscuso, also known as Tonnara Su Pranu, is particularly characteristic. It was built toward the end of the 16th century, is designated as a cultural asset by the Italian Ministry of Culture, documents Sardinia’s historic fixed tuna-fishing system and is considered an important example of industrial archaeology.
Tonnara Su Pranu and the Sheltered Bay
Tonnara Su Pranu lies in one of the most sheltered bays along Portoscuso’s coast, which is shaped by prevailing northwesterly winds, and at the same time in one of the best-protected bays in the whole of southwest Sardinia. The south-facing bay lies between the Gulf of Portupaleddu, also called Portopaglietto, northwest of the tonnara, and the gulf with the tourist harbor and waterfront promenade to the southeast.
The complex has a trapezoidal layout and an inner courtyard of about 5,000 square meters that opens toward the sea. The accommodations of the Tonnarotti and various warehouses with Sardinian tiled roofs border it. Su Pranu was organized as an independent fortress. The complex included an oven, storage rooms for flour, grain, oil and wine, as well as workshops for nails and metal fittings, for repairing fishing equipment and for spinning ropes.
Beaches, Cliffs and Harbor
Portopaglietto, also called Portopaleddu, is considered a coastal attraction with clear seawater and fine sand. The Costa Crobettana has a much rougher character, with impressive cliffs falling steeply toward the sea. The harbor of Portoscuso lies opposite the island of San Pietro and connects Sardinia with Carloforte, one of the most important tourist destinations in the island group.
Church, Archaeology and Local Festivals
The Church of Santa Maria d’Itria was built in 1655. Santa Maria d’Itria is the patron saint of the Tonnarotti; her festival is celebrated 50 days after Easter with sporting, musical and folk events. San Giorgio is home to a Punic necropolis with eleven burials dating from 770 to 750 BC. The Domus de Janas of Guroneddu date back to the Neolithic period.
The Sagra del Tonno is also part of the local calendar. Organized by the Pro Loco di Portoscuso, the event takes place on June 13 in honor of Saint Anthony and has been held there repeatedly since 1965. Fresh tuna is prepared according to a traditional local recipe and distributed with bread and wine.
Hiking Stage from Portoscuso to Bacu Abis
Portoscuso can also be the starting point for a clearly defined hike: Stage 29 of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara leads from Portoscuso to Bacu Abis. It is 19.0 km long, challenging on foot and listed as taking 6 hours and 30 minutes. The route follows spectacular volcanic cliffs along the southwest coast to the Bacu Abis mine, where mining activity in the Sulcis coal basin began.
When choosing accommodation in Portoscuso, you can therefore tailor your stay to your interests: coastal towers and the tonnara, coves and cliffs, harbor connections, archaeological sites, local cuisine or the hike to Bacu Abis each offer their own focus. These different themes help you determine your travel rhythm and the right location for your plans.
