Pinn'e Maiolu and Genna Maria: archaeology between an early settlement and a fortified nuraghe complex
Villanovaforru combines an early-dated settlement with a nuraghe complex whose development spans several construction phases. The Pinn'e Maiolu settlement dates from the 9th to the 8th century BC and shows later periods of use in Phoenician-Punic and Roman times.
The Pinn'e Maiolu archaeological site lies approximately 1 kilometre southeast of the Genna Maria nuraghe complex. This approximate distance links two independent archaeological sites and provides a specific orientation for planning the space between them.
The Genna Maria complex developed from a central tower. Bastions with initially three and later four towers were then built. A wall with six corner towers eventually enclosed the site.
During the Punic-Roman period, Genna Maria was used for votive purposes in honour of Demeter and Kore.
The archaeological complex is located at an altitude of over 400 metres in a wooded park with Mediterranean plants. Thus, altitude, woodland and Mediterranean vegetation meet the archaeological site in the same place.
