Sardara between Archaeology and Thermal History

For those interested in culture, Sardara’s museum, churches, fortress and thermal springs can be explored separately. The Villa Abbas exhibition, opened in 1997, extends over two floors and eight rooms. It covers the history from the prehistoric and Nuragic periods through the Punic and Roman eras to the Middle Ages. Castello di Monreale served both as a military fortress and as a royal residence.

Museums and Sacred Buildings

In Sardara’s historic centre, on Piazza Libertà, lies the Civico Museo Archeologico Villa Abbas. It is housed in a restored building dating from 1914. The restored 1914 building houses an exhibition covering a period extending to the Middle Ages. The second exhibition hall displays the Nuragic village and the sacred well, which were discovered beside the Church of Santa Anastasia and later excavated scientifically.

The Church of San Gregorio Magno dates from the first decades of the 14th century and is a remarkable example of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Inside, it houses Estofado-de-Oro wooden sculptures, an 18th-century organ and the altarpiece with wooden altar of the Madonna d’Itria from the 18th century. At San Gregorio Magno, 14th-century architectural history meets 18th-century furnishings. The sacred well of the Santuario di Sant'Anastasia has a circular chamber with a false domed vault. It can be reached via a staircase protected by a corridor covered with stone slabs.

Thermal Springs and a Festive Occasion

The Santa Maria de is Acquas valley has five thermomineral springs, is crossed by the Rio Sacer and is surrounded by Nuragic monuments. The area of the ancient Aquae Neapolitanae near Sardara preserves the history of a Roman thermal complex that was connected to the thermal springs there. These springs were used therapeutically in Roman times. The Santa Maria de is Aquas festival begins on the penultimate Monday in September and lasts four days. For travel planning, the date should be considered a four-day period in September.
