Four beaches along a protected coast
Porto Istana lies on an indented coastline. The Bay of Porto Istana lies at the foot of the granite promontory of Capo Ceraso in the Murta Maria district, in the Gulf and the area of Olbia. At the same time, Porto Istana forms the northern boundary of the Capo Coda Cavallo marine protected area. Its location by the granite promontory and the marine protected area connects the beach resort with a clearly defined natural area.

Porto Istana consists of four beaches separated from one another by small rocky sections. The rocky sections visibly divide the coast into individual areas. This creates a sequence of separate beach areas within the bay, defining the character of Porto Istana. When planning the coast of Porto Istana, the four beach areas should be considered as separate sections.
Historic nature trail and panoramic views
The historic nature trail between Porto Istana beach and the town centre of Porto San Paolo runs along the Sa Ribba Ruia (La Riva Rossa) coastal section. The path therefore connects the beach area, the coastal section and the town centre in a single route. When planning a walk in Porto Istana, this route between the beach and the town centre can be considered as a specific trail.
The path offers panoramic views across the entire Gulf of Porto Istana and of the island of Tavolara. Alongside the coastal section, the Gulf of Porto Istana and Tavolara are therefore visual reference points along the path.
Bus line 5 for arrival
Bus line 5 is a specific point of reference for getting there. It runs daily between Olbia, Le Saline and Porto Istana. The daily route provides a public transport connection between these three places. Bus line 5 can therefore be directly included in planning journeys between Olbia, Le Saline and Porto Istana.
Beaches in the immediate surroundings
The immediate surroundings of Porto Istana include Spiaggia di Porto Istana, Spiaggia di Murta Maria, Spiaggia dell'Isola dei Cavalli and Spiaggia Le Saline. In addition to Porto Istana's four separate beach sections, these further shore areas are part of the town's coastal surroundings.
Ancient site, museums and castle
There are also cultural and historical destinations in the surroundings of Porto Istana. The ancient site Holy Well Sa Testa is located in the immediate vicinity of Porto Istana. The area also includes the Museo del mare Olbia museum, the Museo archeologico di Olbia archaeological museum and Castello di Pedres o Pedreso castle. For those interested in culture, the surroundings of Porto Istana therefore offer an ancient site, two museums and a castle.
