Art and architecture in Tempio Pausania
Piazza Faber is home to a colourful installation designed by Renzo Piano together with Studio Alvisi Kirimoto. It captures the sunlight and gives the granite greater brightness. Colour, sunlight and granite come together to define the appearance of the installation. At the Templense Museum in the Polo Museale Templense, you can see important works of art, including Pierre Pouget’s statue of Saint Sebastian, as well as an old book collection featuring Cinquecentine and typographic rarities. The museum therefore brings together a single sculptural work and historical book collections.
The Stazione Ferroviaria di Tempio also combines architecture with art. Its interior murals by Giuseppe Biasi depict scenes of rural life and everyday life; some of the paintings have been lost. The Casa di Nino di Gallura is an important example of Tempio Pausania’s medieval architecture. Following a recent restoration, three characteristic openings can be seen there. These three openings form a clearly visible detail of the restored house.
A colourful tradition shapes the Carnevale Tempiese: during the parades, large, colourful allegorical papier-mâché floats make their way along the carnival route.
Trails through the town and countryside
Two trails offer different ways to explore the area on foot. The “Alla scoperta della Città di Pietra” walking trail starts at the Stazione Ferroviaria di Tempio, ends at Piazza Gallura and leads to the town’s main sights. The “Scoprendo i parchi e il verde cittadino” route is a walking trail that begins at Parco delle Rimembranze and runs in the shade of the town’s parks. This gives you a choice between a trail to the main sights and a walk through the town’s green spaces.
A specific point of reference is the route to Nuraghe Majori: From the built-up area of Tempio Pausania, follow the SS 133 towards Palau, turn right at kilometre 1.5 onto an unpaved road and continue for approximately 450 metres to Nuraghe Majori on the left. The approximate distance and the turn-off divide the approach into two clearly identifiable sections.
The Monte Limbara route also begins in Tempio Pausania. It leads by car or off-road vehicle through forests and along trails to the Cima del Monte Limbara. This route differs from the two town trails in both its mode of transport and its surroundings.
Springs, views and regional flavours
The Fonti di Rinagghiu are diuretic springs that have been known since antiquity for their therapeutic properties and are located in a cool, green setting. From the summit of Nuraghe Izzana, you can enjoy 360-degree views of the Valle della Luna landscape.
Moscato di Tempio is a DOC sparkling wine produced in Tempio and the surrounding areas from 100% Moscato grapes.
