Ales between History and Landscape
History and landscape meet here in very different forms. Castello di Barumele preserves a medieval fortification wall and a polygonal tower; at the same time, it is one of the most important castles of the Giudicato of Arborea. The Cattedrale di San Pietro was rebuilt in 1686 under the Genoese master builder Domenico Spotorno. Its 36-metre-high main dome and a Roman-school pipe organ, Sardinia’s oldest surviving instrument, create two clearly distinct architectural and musical accents. The building history thus ranges from the medieval Castello to the reconstruction of the cathedral in 1686.
Piazza Antonio Gramsci
Piazza Antonio Gramsci was inaugurated on 1 May 1977. It comprises a symbolic cavea with steps, a black basalt block shaped like a fountain, a millstone and a triangular limestone landmark. Different forms and materials thus define a square whose individual elements are closely connected to its design. The cavea with its steps and the triangular limestone landmark represent two differently shaped components of the square.
Museums with Regional Connections
The Museo del Giocattolo Tradizionale della Sardegna is located in Zeppara, a district of Ales. Its collection comprises handcrafted toys made at home from materials provided by the local environment. In a workshop area, you can try out the toys yourself.
The Museo cinematografico features a permanent exhibition of historical photographs of Ales. Together with the toy museum, it offers different ways of exploring regional everyday culture and the documented past of the town. The focus of one museum is on handcrafted toys, while the other centres on historical photographs of Ales.
Monte Arci and the Landscape
Aquafrida on Monte Arci is an equipped picnic park with dining and accommodation facilities. Aquafrida also offers a viewpoint overlooking the Gulf of Oristano. The remains of an old road to Ales run alongside the gorge of the Rio Canali for considerable stretches. In the village of Conca de s’eda, a pre-Nuragic burial ground is located at Gemitoriu. The old road and the burial ground thus represent two different historical traces.
Festivals in the Annual Calendar
The celebration of Santa Maria in Ales includes processions and musical activities on 8 September. The celebration of San Sebastiano in Ales includes fires, Sardinian dances and processions on 20 January. Both dates combine religious forms of celebration with visible communal and musical elements.
Getting to Ales
