Solanas: Local history between the Middle Ages and local tradition

Solanas combines local history with churches and local tradition. On the edge of the Solanas district stands the Chiesetta di San Pietro Apostolo. The small church probably dates from the early 16th century and adds a concrete historical feature to the village.

Solanas developed at a site that was already densely populated in Phoenician times and belonged to the territory of Tharros. In the Middle Ages, Solanas was a small settlement called “Salanis”. In 1245, the church of San Pietro di Silanus was associated with Bencivenni of Perugia; it is identified with present-day Solanas.

Medieval history also preserves a direct connection to the place name. At the beginning of the 11th century, Judge Gonario Comita de Gunale bore the designation “De Salanis” during the Judicate of Arborea to indicate his origin from Solanas. In 1410, Solanas became a small settlement in the Catalan-Aragonese Kingdom of Sardinia.

Several events show Solanas as a place with its own historical agency. In 1388, representatives of Solanas signed the peace between the two warring states. When the payment of taxes was forcibly enforced, around 80 residents of Solanas, men and women, rebelled and forced the soldiers to withdraw. In August 1789, the residents of Solanas refused to pay the taxes and to surrender the feudal dues in the warehouses of the fief of the Marquis of Arcais.

Church art and local tradition

The Parrocchiale di San Pietro has a Latin-cross floor plan, a single-nave layout and two chapels at the transept. The parish church also contains a carved and polychrome-painted wooden statue of the Madonna “cannuga”, made by a Sardinian workshop in the 18th century.

Local tradition includes “C’è Pasta per Te”, a traditional pasta festival in Solanas organized by the Coro Santa Barbara. The pasta festival thus adds a concrete connection to a local culinary tradition to the historical perspective on Solanas.

The wider Cabras area is home to the Mistras, Mari ‘e Pauli and Pauli ‘e Sali Ramsar wetlands. Mistras is therefore located in the wider regional surroundings of Solanas. Nature enthusiasts can incorporate this landscape connection into their travel plans alongside the village’s historical themes, without equating Solanas itself with the wetlands.

A shuttle bus is also planned for a clearly defined period: from 28 August to 7 September 2026, it will connect Cabras, Solanas and the village of San Salvatore on the occasion of the celebrations of San Salvatore. This specific period can be taken into account when planning a stay in Solanas.
