Historic Centre and Notable Buildings

The historic centre of Bessude dates back to around the 13th century. The houses there feature architraves decorated with arches, whose style reveals Aragonese and Spanish influences. Numerous houses in Bessude are also adorned with characteristic murals. Together, these elements shape the town’s architectural and artistic character, although the individual buildings do not all have to be assigned to the same historical period.

The local history also includes several religious buildings. The Chiesa di San Leonardo in Bessude dates from the 16th century. The Festa della Madonna di Runaghes is also part of the town’s events calendar. It begins on 21 August with a novena; in the evening, the statue of the Madonna is carried in a torchlit procession to the parish church.
