Churches in the town area and the Castello dei Doria in the surrounding area

The Castello dei Doria – Chiaramonti is a castle in the surrounding area of Chiaramonti and was built around the 13th century. It formed part of the defensive line protecting the Doria’s possessions in Anglona. The original structure consisted of a square tower within a fortified wall; the rest of the surviving complex was later converted into a church during the Aragonese period.

Around 1500, the former fortress became the parish church of San Matteo in Chiaramonti and was dedicated to this saint. The Chiesa di San Matteo is the parish church in the town area of Chiaramonti. Another medieval church is Santa Maria Maddalena, which stands out for its two-colour construction. It was originally built in the 13th century as a single-nave basilica and received two side chapels during an extension in 1323.

Santa Giusta also offers a distinctive cultural feature: its interior walls display an extensive collection of ex-votos. In Chiaramonti, this form of singing continues today as a poetic and musical competition known as sa gara.

Prehistoric traces and distinctive architectural forms

Nuraghe Ruiu is a single-tower Nuraghe with two chambers arranged one above the other. The Su Sassu area is also home to the megalithic wall of Punta Corrales, around 1.7 kilometres from the town of Chiaramonti. The megalithic wall of Punta S’Arroccu lies approximately 5 kilometres from the wall of Punta Corrales and is likewise attributed to the Monte Claro culture.

The Domus de janas di Su Murrone necropolis includes Tomb 1, with a large monumental atrium and an entrance framed by relief decoration. The different forms – from Nuragic construction and megalithic walls to burial architecture carved into the rock – make the cultural history of the surrounding area particularly varied.

Mountains, plateau and waterfalls

Several mountains lie in the surrounding area of Chiaramonti: Monte Sistu, Monte Cacchile, Punta Corales and Monte Scala de Malta. The Altopiano de su Sassu is an area of great natural and scenic value in Chiaramonti. It is home to wildlife, extensive stands of mastic, cistus and asphodel, as well as impressive oaks and holm oaks.

One of the notable water landscapes is Istrampu Moronzanos, a waterfall around 7 metres high that forms a natural pool in a trachyte gorge. Istrampu de Chirralza consists of natural waterfalls fed by the Riu Filighesos and its small tributaries. Getting there and orientation

To reach Chiaramonti, leave the SS 131 after the turn-off for Ozieri and take road 127 towards Tempio Pausania. From Sassari towards Olbia, take the SS 594 to Tempio as far as the turn-off for the Su Murrone district, then continue for approximately 2 kilometres.
