Ploaghe: Churches, Art and Nuragic Traces
Accommodation in Ploaghe
Ploaghe combines a volcanic landscape with sacred buildings and Nuragic traces. The town lies on the southwestern slope of Monte San Matteo, a volcano in Logudoro that has been extinct for thousands of years. The landscape includes walls of volcanic origin as well as megalithic walls inherited from the Nuragic culture. Here, natural history and early culture appear as two interconnected aspects of the town.
Nuragic Landscape and Excursions
There are around 76 Nuragic settlements in Ploaghe. Most of them are located on plateaus that are regarded as genuine Nuragic villages. Ploaghe offers suitable places for excursions and hikes. Those who enjoy exploring on foot while also seeking historical context will therefore find two areas of interest at the same destination. The plateaus give the history of settlement a distinctly scenic setting.
Historic Sacred Buildings
San Pietro Apostolo was the cathedral of the medieval Diocese of Ploaghe from 1090 to 1503. Its floor plan dates from the 15th century; the church had two naves and was built in the Late Gothic style. At the end of the 17th century, a third nave was added, modeled on the original style. This chronology makes San Pietro Apostolo particularly interesting from a cultural and historical perspective.
The Sanctuary of San Michele di Salvenero was built at the end of the 11th century. The ruins of the former Vallombrosian monastery have been preserved around the church. The Capuchin monastery of Ploaghe was founded in 1651 and inaugurated together with the church in 1659. Funtana Manna is a monumental basin made of walls of hewn stone and follows the model of the Sassari fountain Rosello from the 17th century.
Art, Inscriptions and Crafts
The Ploaghe Pinacoteca in the Oratorio del Rosario contains paintings from the 14th to the 19th century. They come from the collection of the 19th-century canon Giovanni Spano. The monumental cemetery of Ploaghe preserves 39 funerary inscriptions written in Logudorese and three in Italian on white marble tablets. The cemetery is located near the Church of San Paolo. In this way, art, writing and sacred places come together as different cultural focal points.
The colors used for the handmade carpets from Ploaghe were and still are obtained locally from wild-growing plants. These plants include saffron, alder, pomegranate peel, mastic leaves and elderflower. The plant-based origin of the dyes establishes a clear connection between craftsmanship and the landscape.
Holy Week and Easter Traditions
Holy Week in Ploaghe includes the crucifixion ceremony “ingravamentu” in San Pietro Church on Good Friday, followed by the “des'isgravamentu” ceremony, during which the cross is taken down. On Easter Sunday, the statues of the risen Christ and the Madonna, carried by members of the local brotherhoods, meet in the “s’incontru” rite. These rites give the days of Holy Week and Easter a tangible religious form.
