Garden City, Foundation and Architecture
Fertilia was designed according to Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City model and officially founded on 8 March 1936. At the same time, the town has preserved features of rationalist architecture associated with the Fascist new towns founded during the interwar period. Thus, an urban-planning concept and a precisely dated foundation meet in a townscape that is best understood through its architecture.
This connection is particularly clear in the squares. Piazza Venezia Giulia in Fertilia has an exedra-shaped layout based on the original plan drawn by engineer Arturo Miraglia in 1935. The seaside Piazza 9 maggio was planned in the design drawings with a rotunda intended to symbolize the bow of a ship projecting over the sea. The two squares thus direct attention to different aspects of planning and design.
Memory in the Townscape
The history of the community is also part of Fertilia’s character. The Ecomuseo Egea conveys the memory of a heterogeneous community whose members rebuilt their lives in freedom far from their homeland. The Ecomuseo Egea project extends from the “Ex Officine” museum pavilion to the founding town of Fertilia and its diverse community.
The townscape also features a bronze statue of the winged lion of Saint Mark, commemorating the Julian and Dalmatian exiles who arrived from their homeland in 1947. Together with the Ecomuseo, this motif provides access to the historical experiences associated with Fertilia without reducing the town to its founding architecture.
Lagoon and Coastal Routes
The Calich Lagoon covers approximately 92 hectares and has an average depth of about 1.5 meters. It is recognized at both national and Community level as a wetland of high conservation value. Anyone wishing to combine landscape and local history can therefore consider the lagoon as a focus in its own right alongside the squares and sites of remembrance.
A walking and cycling path runs along the Calich Lagoon toward the Roman bridge. The Porto Conte Nature Park’s network of routes also includes nature trails around the lagoon. In addition, an approximately 5-kilometer-long cycle path along the coastal road connects Fertilia and Alghero. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider the routes along the lagoon and the coastal connection separately.
Punta Negra is a small cove beach in the bay of the same name on the route from Fertilia toward Porto Conte. This coastal connection adds a specific seaside location to the landscape perspective.
