Castrofilippo lies in the upper part of a promontory above the upper valley of the Iacono stream, a right-bank tributary of the Naro. In the town, local history and the surrounding landscape come together.

Historic Centre, Fortification and Church Art

The Cortile Castello was the former residence of the Morreale family and the urban centre from which the construction of Castrofilippo began. On Monte Castellaccio, about 500 metres north of Castrofilippo, there is a possibly Byzantine fortification that was later reused by the Arabs. While the Cortile Castello formed the urban centre, Monte Castellaccio lies north of the town.

In the town, the Chiesa Madrice was built in 1634 by Maurizio Monreale, Duke of Castrofilippo; it houses a statue of Maria Santissima del Rosario. The Chiesa Madrice also contains a wooden statue of the Madonna del Rosario with Saint Vincent, made around 1600 and attributed to the Gangi school. The wooden statue therefore predates the construction of the Chiesa Madrice. In this way, the church combines architectural history with older sacred art. For those interested in culture, the 1634 church building and two depictions of the Virgin Mary are the main highlights of the Chiesa Madrice.

During the Good Friday processions in Castrofilippo, Christ, Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John proceed together to Calvario, where the Crucifixion ceremony takes place. Il Calvario was built in 1937. The Good Friday date ties the procession to a single day in the liturgical year.
