Racalmuto combines historic buildings, literary sites, religious traditions and regional cuisine to create a diverse Sicilian destination. Culture between the castle, theatre and literature

Castello Chiaramontano is located in the present-day town centre, on the north-eastern edge of Piazza Umberto I. It is accessible through the main gate on the piazza. Originally, the complex extended over three evenly arranged levels. Two large round towers characterise the Castello; the one on the right was converted into a viewing point during extensive interior restoration.

The Teatro Regina Margherita was built between 1870 and 1880. It has 350 seats, two tiers of boxes, a horseshoe-shaped gallery, an orchestra pit and a large stage. It was designed by Dionisio Sciascia, a student of Filippo Basile's school. The Fondazione Leonardo Sciascia is housed in a power station built in the 1920s and later decommissioned by ENEL, and preserves an important collection of the writer's correspondence. Casa Sciascia is Leonardo Sciascia's parents' home and the place where he wrote his first books. After years of vacancy, the house was acquired and reopened to the public as a cultural and documentation centre dedicated to Sciascia's work and Sicilian literature. Contrada Noce is also part of his biography: Leonardo Sciascia chose this place for writing and reflection.

Sacred buildings and historic routes

The present-day Santuario Maria SS. del Monte was built between 1736 and 1747. It has two entrances, one of which leads via the Scalinata di lu Munti, dating from the late 18th century. The cathedral of S. Maria dell’Annunziata preserves important paintings by the painter Pietro D’Asaro, who originated from Racalmuto, as well as a historically significant parish archive. On 20 June 1620, the cathedral was definitively elevated to the status of Racalmuto's mother church. The historic local landscape also includes the Fontana di li novi cannola, with nine water outlets, a livestock watering trough and a round washhouse, as well as the Castelluccio Svevo. This small fortress was built in the 13th century on the orders of Frederick II and displays features of Swabian castles. It is located 720 metres above sea level and seven kilometres from the historic centre; from there, the surrounding landscape can be viewed.

Festivals with their own traditions

The Festa Maria SS. del Monte traditionally begins in the second week of July and lasts five days. It includes a historic procession with young people on horseback wearing 15th-century costumes, travelling from Castello Chiaramontano to the Madonna sanctuary. The procession of the Madonna image, “u triunfu”, on a cart drawn by two oxen is also part of the festival. The Good Friday liturgy in Racalmuto includes a crucifixion rite with a procession from the Santuario Maria SS. del Monte to the local Golgotha.

The Madonna del Carmelo festival includes public events in the square over the last three days of the second week of August, from Friday to Sunday, including a watermelon festival. The Christmas novena takes place from 16 December to 24 December and includes nativity scenes, music and folk songs. The Circolo Unione is also known as Circolo della Concordia and was founded in 1836. The Racalmuto race track was inaugurated in July 2005.

Exploring the area around Racalmuto

Racalmuto is a stage on the Magna Via Francigena trekking route. By bicycle, you can explore the surrounding landscape and the numerous provincial roads connecting Racalmuto with places in the provinces of Agrigento and Caltanissetta. Racalmuto can be reached via the S.S. 640 “Strada degli Scrittori”. There is also a railway station on the Agrigento–Caltanissetta line.

Local specialities

Racalmuto also has its own culinary highlights. Racalmuto's taralli are distinguished by their lemon flavour and sugar glaze. Mpignulata is considered a typical dish of Racalmuto and is historically linked to the agricultural working tradition. Only fresh fruit from the Contrade Raffo, Saraceno, Garamoli and Roccarossa is used for Racalmuto's lemon granita. “Cubaita racalmutese” is considered a local speciality and differs from the “cubaita” commonly found in other parts of Sicily.
