Realmonte: Coast, History and Regional Cuisine

The Scala dei Turchi, Villa Romana, Teatro Costabianca and Cattedrale di Sale each lend Realmonte a distinct character. They are complemented by traditional cuisine and the rental service at Lido Rossello. This allows the town to combine a striking coastal landscape with history, local recipes and hands-on experiences by the water.

White Cliffs and Practical Information

The Scala dei Turchi is a white cliff facing the sea and shaped like a natural staircase. Its form was created by the effects of wind and waves. Bright rock surfaces and the sea therefore define the landscape of this well-known coastal landmark.

The Strada Provinciale No. 68 Realmonte–Porto Empedocle provides access to the Scala dei Turchi. There are three paid car parks along this road; two more are located at the end of the Discesa Majata.

In spring 2025, access to the Scala dei Turchi was controlled and subject to visitor quotas; reservations were possible exclusively by email. Entry was permitted only when weather, sea, temperature and general safety conditions allowed it.

Watchtower, Villas and Theatre Architecture

An old watchtower stands on Monte Rosso; it was built in 1453 to observe the sea and search for Saracen ships. Monte Rossello, approximately 386 metres high, has a lighthouse and a lookout point offering panoramic views of the coast and sea.

The Villa Romana is located on the beach at Punta Grande in Realmonte. It contains a thermal complex that bears witness to the economic prosperity and high social status of its inhabitants. Polychrome mosaics depict scenes and sea deities.

At the foot of the landscape formed by the limestone gorges of the Baia di Capo Rossello lies Teatro Costabianca, an open-air theatre with a Greek-style cavea. It is divided into five wedges and two sections and has 17 rows of seats for 1,500 spectators.

Every year on 4 December, the feast day of Saint Barbara, a mass is held in the Cattedrale di Sale. It is reserved for salt miners and their families.

Regional Cuisine and Time at Lido Rossello

Realmonte’s traditional cuisine is based on vegetables from the south-facing hills and plains and prepared according to old rural recipes. Cuddriruni consists of two thin layers of dough made with flour and brewer’s yeast. The dish is filled with potatoes, onions, peas, extra virgin olive oil and matured Sicilian Pecorino cheese. This makes it possible to connect the cuisine directly with the town’s agriculturally shaped landscapes.

At Lido Rossello, pedal boats and inflatable boats are available for hire. This specific range of water-based activities complements the coastal and cultural themes that define Realmonte.
