Montevago brings together a geometrically planned town centre, sacred buildings, archaeological traces, distinctive landscapes, as well as wine and thermal waters. History in the Townscape

The historic centre of Montevago follows a planned orthogonal layout with rectangular residential blocks and large courtyards known as “patii”. This clear structure offers its own way into the town’s history: it directs attention not only to individual buildings, but also to the layout of the centre.

The cathedral on the Piano della Matrice was built by the Gravina family between the 17th and 19th centuries and is dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul. The church in the Villaggio Bergamo in Montevago is also dedicated to these saints. The village and the church were built and donated by the city of Bergamo after the 1968 earthquake in the Belice area.

Remembrance and Archaeology

The Percorsi Visivi in Montevago form an open-air museum trail that conveys what the town was like before the 1968 earthquake. In Contrada Caliata, there is an archaeological area on the S.S. 188, two kilometres from the old settlement of Montevago in the direction of Partanna. Remains of a Muslim farmstead from three different phases were identified there.

Many of the caves of San Nicola have been cleaned and prepared so that visitors can easily explore them. For your planning, this combines an interest in underground spaces with an explicitly possible visit.

Plateau, Caves and Trails

The Bosco Magaggiaro covers an extensive calcarenite plateau. It slopes down towards the southeast and is criss-crossed in the west by deep fissures extending to the foothills of the Belice River. A few kilometres from Montevago on the road to Menfi lies the Grotta dei Personaggi, a karst cave with a branching system of passages, fissures, shafts and galleries.

The route from the high plateau of Montevago to the Fonte Sacra leads through a wild, rugged landscape with a broad valley and demanding paths between rocks and typical vegetation. This is the right landscape aspect for planning in which nature counts not merely as a backdrop, but as part of the route itself.

Wine and Thermal Waters

At the 28th Festa del Vino di Montevago, wines from the Valle del Belìce were sampled in 2025. The Strada del Vino Terre Sicane is a wine tourism route through Contessa Entellina, Menfi, Montevago, Sambuca di Sicilia, Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca. The Festa is associated with 2025; the route establishes an independent regional connection with wine.
