Favara: Art, History and Local Food Culture

Favara brings together education, art, landscape, history and local food culture in specific places. The Biblioteca Museo “Barone Antonio Mendola” combines a library and a museum. It houses around 14,000 volumes, including many historical and scientific works. Both institutions bear the name Antonio Mendola, with the library adding “Barone”. The Museo Civico “Antonio Mendola” in the library includes, among other things, an ornithological collection with more than 100 prepared bird specimens.

Farm Cultural Park and Seven Courtyards

The Seven Courtyards of the Farm Cultural Park form a connected courtyard complex with small buildings, Arab-style gardens and cultural spaces next to the residents’ homes. The Farm Cultural Park transformed abandoned buildings and forgotten streets in Favara into a vibrant centre for art, education and community life. In the Seven Courtyards, the theme of art is combined with a courtyard structure that also includes the residents’ homes.

Landscape and Archaeological Traces

The landscape around Favara also has its own historical and natural dimension. Montagna Caltafaraci is a 531 m-high mountain northwest of Favara, rich in flora and fauna typical of the Mediterranean region as well as archaeological remains. The Necropoli Sicana stretches across two rocky hilltops and comprises forty-three narrow shaft graves. The archaeological remains belong to the same mountain as the typical flora and fauna of the Mediterranean region.

Castles and Churches Through the Centuries

Favara’s historic architecture includes the Castello dei Chiaramonte, built around 1280 by Federico II Chiaramonte. The Chiesa di Santa Rosalia is also known as the Chiesa del Purgatorio and was built in the 17th century. The Chiesa del Rosario was declared a national monument, while the Chiesa di San Nicolo dates from the 16th century. The name Chiesa del Purgatorio refers to Santa Rosalia and does not designate a separate place of worship. Together, these buildings provide different perspectives on the history of the town, from the medieval castle to the churches of the early modern period and the protected monument.

Agnello Pasquale and Local Events

A distinct culinary tradition leads to Agnello Pasquale. According to tradition, the nuns of the Collegio di Maria in the “Batia” district of Favara were the first to prepare Agnello Pasquale. The Sagra dell’Agnello Pasquale includes events focused on confectionery, exhibitions and tastings. At the Sagra, confectionery, exhibitions and tastings come together in an event setting.
