Lampedusa between beaches and protected areas

Lampedusa combines sandy beaches with protected coastal areas and cultural sites. Sandy beaches are located along the east and southeast coasts; Spiaggia dei Conigli lies in the Riserva Naturale Isola di Lampedusa, in the Special Area of Conservation ITA040002 and the Special Protection Area ITA040013. The Area Marina Protetta Isole Pelagie marine protected area encompasses Lampedusa and protects diverse marine and coastal habitats, including Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. The work of Lampedusa Turtle Rescue in caring for and rehabilitating injured sea turtles has been documented since 1990.

Coves, grottos and coastal paths

Cala Pulcino is located on the southern side, where several grottos can be visited. Cala Greca is a very small cove with white sand, while Porto N’Tone is a very small beach with fine, white sand. You can view Scoglio del Sacramento from above via a path that begins on the right after the end of the road from Ponente. Improvements and pedestrian access arrangements are planned for the access path to Spiaggia dei Conigli.

Hiking and island views

In the Riserva Naturale Isola di Lampedusa, paths run along the coast and through the Valloni, allowing visitors to observe the flora and fauna. A path begins at Cala Stretta and runs along the coast for part of the way, offering views of the Vallone di Cala Galera. Another path connects sections of old paths with former military tracks and opens up views of the Grotta Tabaccara. Hiking trails lead to the summit of Monte Rosso and to Monte Nero on Lampedusa.

The sea by boat and underwater

A boat tour around Lampedusa lasts three to four hours. The island offers opportunities for diving and snorkeling; the focus is on clear water, diverse seabeds, and abundant marine flora and fauna. The underwater statue Madonna del Mare can be reached on a simple dive at a depth of 14 meters.

Museum, festival and remembrance culture

The Museo Archeologico delle Pelagie offers a chronologically arranged tour through four rooms and displays finds from a Roman fish-processing facility in Cala Salina. The Festa di Maria Santissima di Porto Salvo takes place every year on September 22. The procession begins at the Santuario della Madonna di Porto Salvo and passes through the island’s streets. Between Cala Spugne and Porto Vecchio, the Porta d’Europa commemorates people who died while attempting to reach the coast by sea.
