Montallegro combines a seaside resort, an oasis managed by LIPU and traces of its own history. Coast and Beach in Bovo Marina

Bovo Marina is Montallegro’s seaside resort and has a long beach with very fine sand. The coast includes white cliffs, coastal dunes and a pine forest behind the beach. Out and About by the Water

A panoramic coastal path follows the shore near Bovo Marina and leads to hidden coves that can only be reached on foot. Laghetto Gorgo and the Birdlife

The Oasi LIPU Montallegro consists of Laghetto Gorgo, an artificial basin covering an area of 25 hectares. Laghetto Gorgo is an oasis managed by LIPU and an important resting and nesting site for numerous bird species. On its shores, you can observe the rare European pond turtle. This creates a distinct focal point for nature enthusiasts, clearly different from the beach, dunes and sea at Bovo Marina.

Monte Suso and the History of Montallegro

Montallegro’s first settlement was established on Monte Suso towards the end of the 16th century. The ruins of Monte Suso are considered the only Sicilian example of a 16th-century settlement in which the urban structure, religious and civil buildings, as well as various types of residential units, are still clearly recognisable.

Everyday History at the Museo della Civiltà Contadina

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina was founded in 1991 as part of a school project intended to preserve and enhance the memory of the area. It is divided into three sections: peasant life, the domestic environment and crafts. The museum houses more than 1,000 objects from traditional crafts. Its most valuable item is considered to be a hand-carved and painted Sicilian cart. If you are interested in everyday history, the museum focuses attention on peasant life and traditional work.

Religious Architecture

One of Montallegro’s most important religious buildings is the 18th-century Chiesa Madre di San Leonardo.
