Ciolino: Village Ensemble, Chapel and Rural Traces

Ciolino is considered an ancient village and a district of Resuttano. The villagescape includes a village ensemble with a chapel and manor house, stone houses, preserved stables and hay barns, as well as visible traces of the early settlement buildings. Sacred architecture, residential buildings and rural utility structures come together here in a shared village view, complemented by the seasonal changes in the landscape.

Village Ensemble and Chapel

The Borgo Ciolino includes a village ensemble comprising the chapel and the manor house. The two buildings therefore belong to a shared architectural context; the stone houses and preserved rural buildings expand the ensemble with additional elements of the village.

Ciolino is home to a small chapel that was recently restored. It was built around the middle of the 19th century and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. A wooden crucifix stands on the central altar of this chapel.

Stone Buildings and Rural Traces

The houses in Ciolino are built of stone and have low roofs covered with Sicilian roof tiles. The combination of exposed stone, low roof forms and Sicilian roof tiles characterizes the houses as residential buildings. Stables and hay barns have also been preserved in Ciolino. They preserve the historic rural atmosphere of the place. As preserved rural utility structures, they add further elements of the village's history to the residential buildings.

Pagghiari and Early Settlement Traces

The earliest settlement buildings in Ciolino are called “pagghiari.” They served as dwellings and as shelter for animals. Traces of them are still visible in the village center. The pagghiari represent an early form of settlement in which living quarters and animal shelter belonged together.

Landscape Between Spring and Summer

The landscape of Ciolino is considered sparse and sun-scorched. In spring it is green, while in summer it is characterized by the yellow of the grain. In spring, the green creates a clear contrast with the stone buildings and low roofs. In summer, the yellow of the grain reinforces the rural character of the surroundings. These seasonal changes give the place two different visual sides. The buildings retain their materials and roof forms, while the color mood of the landscape changes.

Spatial Orientation in Ciolino

A provincial road branches off from the “Portella del Morto” junction to Borgo Ciolino. Ciolino also currently appears to be divided into two separate settlement centers located approximately 500 meters apart. For spatial orientation on site, it is therefore necessary to distinguish between the two centers rather than assuming a single compact center. The approximate distance of around half a kilometer serves as a spatial measure, not as an exact boundary. For visiting the area, the turnoff to Borgo Ciolino and the approximate distance between the centers are the specific reference points.
