Montedoro: Casa Musei, Mining History and Observatory
Montedoro offers a focused introduction to cultural themes in which sacred architecture, traditional crafts, mining and astronomy stand side by side. The town is particularly interesting for your trip planning if you would like to combine museums and historical topics with views of regional landscapes.
Culture at the Chiesa Madre and the Casa Musei
The Chiesa Madre of Montedoro was built in 1645 by Mariano de Lucia. Its most recent restoration took place in 1996, returning it to its original forms and colors. Several Casa Musei provide deeper insight into everyday life and local traditions: The Casa Museo “I mestieri scomparsi” displays objects, pictures and reconstructions of old craft workshops, including a tailor’s shop, a barber shop and a carpenter’s workshop. It also commemorates professions that have disappeared, such as blacksmith, knife grinder, town crier, dung or fertilizer collector, coachman and storyteller.
The Casa Museo “La novena e il presepe” presents the Christmas novena and the nativity tradition. At the Casa Museo “La settimana santa”, the “Laments of Good Friday” can be heard as a special form of intangible cultural heritage. The Casa Museo “Come eravamo” is housed in an old building constructed in the first half of the 19th century. The Case Museo also offer a tour through old Sicilian “Dammusi”, focusing on customs, household objects and traditions.
Memories of Mining and Rural History
The Casa Museo “Grotta di Beniaminu – Il brigantaggio” is located in the so-called “Grutta di Beniaminu”, a cave on Monte Ottavio. There, the history of banditry is conveyed through inscriptions, photographs, folk poems, small objects and copies of ransom letters. The cave actually served as a refuge for bandits between the 19th and 20th centuries. The Casa Museo “Latifondo e lotte contadine” commemorates the post-war peasant struggles for a fairer distribution of agricultural produce, the allocation of uncultivated or poorly managed land and the dismantling of feudal estates.
The Museo della Zolfara “Angelo Petix” houses the permanent exhibition “Zolfare e zolfatari di Montedoro, civica raccolta di testimonianze etnostoriche”, featuring photographs, reconstructions, minerals and mining tools. Thus, alongside rural everyday life, work in the sulfur mines is also a central focus.
Observatory and Planetarium
The Montedoro Observatory houses an astronomical Newton-Cassegrain telescope with a 600 mm primary mirror. The “Margherita Hack” Planetarium includes a dome with a diameter of 7.0 meters and 50 seats, as well as a digital planetarium capable of projecting Full-Dome films. The observatory organized astronomy courses and daytime and evening tours for schools, libraries and the general public.
Orientation on Monte Ottavio
The Museo della Zolfara “Angelo Petix” is located at the entrance to the Parco Urbano di Montedoro on Monte Ottavio, near the Nadurello Mine, the oldest and longest-operated mine in Montedoro. The Montedoro Observatory is also located on Monte Ottavio, west of the built-up area. If you coordinate your accommodation and daily planning with the sites you visit, it is therefore worthwhile to consider the town area and the surrounding region separately.
The Museum Expòsitivo – Studio d’Arte di Angelo Castellano and Castello Manfredonico are located in the vicinity of Montedoro. The wider surrounding region also includes the Museo archeologico regionale di Marianopoli, Chiaramonte Castle, the island of Sicily, San Leone Beach, and the mountains Monte Cane and Monte Cammarata.
