Zafferana Etnea: Mount Etna Landscapes, Hiking Trails and Sicilian Culture

Zafferana Etnea connects the slopes of Mount Etna with a townscape where Baroque heritage, honey-making traditions and striking landscapes come together. Landscape between the Sea and the Volcano

The municipal area of Zafferana Etnea extends from approximately 400 m above sea level to the volcano’s 3,340 m-high summit; its landscapes include Mediterranean maquis, lava flows, dense forests and the desert-like summit zone. Zafferana Etnea is one of the municipalities within Parco dell’Etna. From the town’s viewpoints, the vista stretches from Calabria to Augusta; at the same time, you can trace ancient craters and lava flows that spread down towards the valleys.

Monte Serra Pizzuta Galvarina is a secondary crater partially covered by a pine forest. Ilice di Carrinu is also known as Ilice di Pantano and Ilici du Pantanu and is a holm oak more than 700 years old on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna in Zone B of the park. The tree has also been included in Italy’s heritage of green monuments and appears on the list of 150 trees of exceptional historical and monumental value. Piazza Umberto I offers a different view of the surroundings: its viewpoint looks out over the sea and the urban gardens below.

Hiking Trails and Excursions on Mount Etna

Zafferana Etnea is considered a starting point for excursions to explore the landscapes and nature trails in its local area. Piano del Vescovo is crossed by the SP 92, which runs from Zafferana Etnea to the area around Rifugio Sapienza. From there, Trail 727 begins towards Serra del Salifizio. After passing a lava cliff used as a climbing wall, this route leads to a ridge overlooking Valle del Bove.

Another connection within the network of trails is the Piano dell’Acqua–Monte Calanna route. It branches off Trail 704 at 747 m above sea level, less than 800 m from its endpoint in the Ballo hamlet of the municipality of Zafferana Etnea. A hiking trail from Contrada Dagalone largely follows the course of an old, partly unpaved mule track and leads to Ilice di Carrinu. A hiking trail running through Zafferana Etnea offers views of Mount Etna, Valle del Bove and the Ionian coast; another trail also reaches Serra del Salifizio, with views of Valle del Bove.

From the SP 92 provincial road between Zafferana Etnea and the area around Rifugio Sapienza, you can reach a hiking trail along which the small Rifugio di Casa del Vescovo and several caves are located; these were formerly used to obtain and store snow. The various trailheads therefore connect volcanic landscapes, forests, ancient craters and expansive views, without every excursion having the same character.

Baroque Heritage, Local History and Beekeeping Culture

The Chiesa Madre Santa Maria della Provvidenza is considered a symbol of Sicilian Baroque. Its façade and the two flanking twin towers are made of white stone; a black lava-stone staircase shapes the entrance. Inside is an altar dedicated to Saint Joseph with a large altarpiece painted by Giuseppe Sciuti in 1854.

The Biblioteca Comunale “F. Guglielmino” is located in the Palazzina Liberty in Parco Comunale. The Casa Museo dell’Apicoltore presents educational displays on the millennia-old relationship between bees and humans, as well as traditional honey-production techniques. The Pro Loco of Zafferana Etnea offers a short guided tour of the town centre and places of historical and natural significance for schools, groups, families and individuals. This tour must be booked at least 24 hours before arrival.

Honey, Regional Products and Events

Zafferana Etnea is part of the “Città del miele” association; according to the local tourism presentation, the town accounts for approximately 15% of Italy’s honey.

The “Sciatore” also reflects the special connection between Mount Etna and regional food culture. It is a milk-based sponge cake covered with dark chocolate, invented in Zafferana Etnea in the 1940s to provide energy for skiers on Mount Etna.

The Ottobrata Zafferanese was founded in 1978 to promote high-quality products from Mount Etna and the region, including grapes, apples, honey, chestnuts and mushrooms. In the 1990s, it was expanded to include a presentation of traditional crafts from the Mount Etna region. These include working with lava stone and wrought iron, basket weaving and decorating Sicilian carts. Etna in Scena is a summer cultural events series in Zafferana Etnea that has presented music, theatre, dance and comedy on the slopes of the volcano for more than 20 years.
