Licodia Eubea among castle ruins, a rock church and festival traditions
Licodia Eubea combines historical evidence with rock architecture, religious festivals and local products. If you would like to combine cultural impressions with an authentic local character during your trip to Italy, several themes lead directly into the history of the town. The Castello Santapau recalls a profound turning point: the earthquake of 11 January 1693 destroyed the complex, which was never rebuilt.
Grotta dei Santi: Rock complex and church interior
The Grotta dei Santi complex is a rock formation in the municipality of Licodia Eubea. It is located on Poggio dei Santi hill in Contrada Alia, southeast of Licodia Eubea. The last cave in the complex is particularly impressive. It was converted into a single-room church and features clearly visible frescoes. These include a depiction of the Crucifixion, dated to the 11th or 12th century. The combination of natural rock space and sacred furnishings makes the Grotta dei Santi an important destination for anyone interested in early religious art and historic sites.
Castello Santapau and Palazzo Mugnos
The ruins of Castello Santapau stand on a calcareous sandstone elevation and overlook the historic centre of Licodia Eubea. The origins of the castle are generally traced back to the Byzantine period. Together with the earthquake of 1693, the surviving wall remains tell the story of a place where older settlement traces and later changes overlap.
A different architectural character is displayed by Palazzo Mugnos on Via Mugnos. Its main façade has considerable artistic value because of its friezes and is attributed to the Late Baroque and Rococo periods. No confirmed construction date has been documented for the complex; it is generally dated to the 17th to 18th century. Palazzo Mugnos was extensively consolidated after the earthquake of 1693. This cautious chronological classification helps you avoid reading the façade as a uniform record of just one construction phase.
Festivals between relics and grapes
The Festa Santa Margherita is Licodia Eubea's patronal festival and takes place on 20 July to commemorate the saint's martyrdom. The celebrations culminate on the feast day in a solemn procession with the relic and a statue of Santa Margherita dating from the 16th century. The July programme also includes the first display of the relic, the saint's skull, as well as the pilgrimage to the votive chapel dedicated to Santa Margherita in Contrada Masera, which is associated with a legend.
Another local tradition is the Festa dell'Uva. It includes tastings of table grapes and local products. Alongside castle ruins, palazzi and religious memories, this gives local culture a culinary dimension. The Museo Civico “A. Di Vita” complements these themes with educational activities, meetings and initiatives promoting archaeology and local history.
