Centuripe between History and Mount Etna

Centuripe lies on a ridge between the Simeto Valley and Mount Etna. Its location gives the town a distinct landscape setting, while its history dates back to the 8th century BC. Ancient History and the Art of Terracotta

Centuripe was founded by the Sicels in the 8th century BC. During the Hellenistic period, the town developed into one of Sicily’s most important centres of terracotta production. This tradition is reflected in the so-called Centuripine vases. They were created between the 3rd and 1st centuries BC and are polychrome vases featuring mythological scenes in vivid colours, painted decorations applied after firing and relief-like floral motifs. The Regional Archaeological Museum of Centuripe brings together municipal collections from the first decades of the 20th century with finds from regular excavations carried out since 1951.

Churches, Frescoes and Unusual Buildings

The Church of San Giuseppe dates from 1730 and has a Baroque interior. It also retains its original white-stone floor, one of the few surviving floors of its kind in Sicily. The Experimental Art Centre “Il Purgatorio” is housed in a former church built in the first half of the 17th century and designated Centuripe’s first mother church in 1645. In the presbytery, the centre preserves plant-like frescoes, including depictions of the Sacrifice of Isaac and the sufferings of Job.

Other historic sites include the “Antiquarium” exhibition centre in the cloister of a former Augustinian monastery and the monumental “Augustales” complex. Its name derives from an inscription found there, which the Augustal quadrumvir Lucius Calpurnius Aphthonetus dedicated to the Genius Augustus. The complex was very probably part of the Roman forum of Centuripe. The “Corradino Castle” building, on the other hand, served a funerary function and dates from the 2nd or 3rd century AD; it is therefore not an ordinary castle.

Hilly Landscape and Views

Seen from above, Centuripe’s hilltop layout resembles a starfish or an outstretched person. Villa Corradino stands in an exceptionally scenic location and offers views over the Catania Plain, the Simeto Valley and Mount Etna. Outside Centuripe, the “Vagni” thermal building lies in a water-rich valley. A large cistern was once used to channel water to the thermal baths.

Hot-Air Balloon Rides and Regional Products

Centuripe’s tourist offerings include hot-air balloon rides with views of the Calanchi del Cannizzola and Mount Etna in the background. The Ruralia farmers’ market in Carcaci, Centuripe, showcases another side of the town. The market features local products, tastings, entertainment and music.
