Villarosa: Mountain Landscape, Mining History and Cultural Heritage

Villarosa is located in the mountainous Erei region between the Salso River, also known as the Imera Meridionale, and its tributary, the Morello. The present-day town center was founded in 1762, after Placido Notarbartolo-Zati received the “Licentia Populandi” on April 10 of that same year. Mining History and Museums

Sulfur mining in Villarosa began between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This past comes to life at the Treno Museo: the museum preserves furniture, household items, equipment, tools and accessories used by the farmers and miners of Villarosa. It is housed in specially converted freight cars at Villarosa railway station.

The Casa Museo Villapriolo presents the Casa dello Zolfataio, an original farmhouse from the late 19th century. The objects on display there include an Italian-Swiss threshing machine from 1955, which was used to harvest grain. The museum also includes a faithful reconstruction of the Bottega del Ciabattino. Visits are possible by prior reservation; groups and school classes can visit the museum from Monday to Friday by arrangement.

Churches and Places of Remembrance

The Chiesa Immacolata Concezione stands on the foundations of the 16th-century church of Madonna di Magando. Inside, it has three marble altars: the central altar is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, while the two side altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart and the Madonna del Carmelo, respectively.

At the railway station, the 1876 Cimelio delle Acque commemorates the water supply system. The structure displays photographs of the Sorgente Gazzana, which was used to supply water to steam locomotives. The Monumento all’Emigrante contains a mine cart from the Charleroi mining district in Belgium. Miners who had emigrated from Villarosa donated it in memory of their departure for mines beyond the Alps.

Ridges, Water and Archaeology

Monte Marcasita is a 590-meter-high ridge south of Villarosa; the Morello River runs nearby. In the area around Villarosa, the Lago Morello area currently forms part of a nature oasis of considerable interest for fauna. This aspect of the landscape complements the historic sites with views of waterways, ridges and the natural surroundings.

Monte Giulfo reaches approximately 761 meters above sea level and overlooks the built-up area of Villarosa. On the mountain, the archaeological site includes a sanctuary where rituals associated with the Thesmophoria were probably held. The settlement on Monte Giulfo dates from the late 7th century to the first decades of the 5th century BC.

Case Bastione is a prehistoric archaeological site in the Villarosa area. The phases of use of the Capanna 5 structure at Case Bastione have been dated to the period between 2500 and 1800 BC. The archaeological perspective of the area therefore extends far beyond its mining history and the foundation of the present-day town center.

Pastry Traditions and Religious Heritage

Villarosa’s pastry traditions include Sfilici, Vucciddati with almonds and figs, Calinoli and Mustazzoli. The Festa della Madonna della Catena takes place at a Marian shrine on a hill about one kilometer from Villarosa’s town center. In the past, it was celebrated as the conclusion of the agricultural work.

The Museo della Memoria is housed in Villa Lucrezia, a summer residence of a prominent local baronial family from the 19th century. It displays ethnographic artifacts documenting the local farming and mining society.
