Campogrande: Archaeology, Forest and Tyrrhenian Views

In Campogrande, sacred art, ancient history, forest paths and destinations on the Tyrrhenian coast come together. The selection includes the Chiesa di San Gaetano, the Necropoli di Tripi, the Sentiero Tallarita and the Castello di Tripi. Church and Sacred Art

The Chiesa di San Gaetano is a recently constructed building. Its church interior houses an antique papier-mâché statue of Saint Gaetano. The work was created in 1906 by the sculptor Matteo Trovato, who came from Barcellona.

Following in the Footsteps of Abakainon

The path from Campogrande described as “archaeological” leads towards the well-known Necropoli di Tripi. The Necropoli di Tripi in Contrada Cardusa preserves evidence of the ancient city of Abakainon. Access to the Necropoli di Tripi is via the A20 or SS113, followed by the SP102 towards Campogrande and the SP115. Anyone wishing to combine the history of Abakainon with a walking route can plan the path towards the Necropoli di Tripi as a separate section. When planning the day, the journey to the necropolis can be treated as a separate section before the visit.

Forest and Paths

The Sentiero Tallarita covers more than three kilometres of forest. The path therefore forms an independent nature section alongside the archaeological destinations. To combine it with a cultural destination, it should be planned as a separate item on the itinerary with an appropriate time frame.

Castello di Tripi and Coastal Views

The Castello di Tripi is located at 610 metres above sea level and offers views of the Tyrrhenian coast from Tindari to Milazzo. The Castello can be reached on foot via Via Pianolo; the final section, approximately 1 km long, runs along an unpaved road. Personal planning should take into account both the elevation and the surface of the final section.

Museums and Ancient Sites in the Area

The Museo Etnografico is a museum in the vicinity of Campogrande. The Parco Archeologico delle Eolie and the Parco Museo Jalari are also located in the area; both are museums. The Tindari Greek Theatre is an ancient site there.

Beaches Around Campogrande

The Spiaggia di Siena, Spiaggia di Falcone, Spiaggia di Tonnarella and Spiaggia di Oliveri are located in the vicinity of Campogrande. The four beaches complement the cultural and archaeological destinations with a separate coastal section. Those combining different focuses can therefore plan them as a separate part of the day.
