History That Continues to Shape the Townscape

Caronia can be explored through several historical points of reference and a range of different landscape features. Particularly prominent is the Castello di Caronia: it was built during the reign of Roger II (1130–1154) and used by his Norman court as a summer residence. At the same time, it forms part of a fortification complex from the defensive system of the 12th and 13th centuries. The complex includes a chapel, rooms from later periods and an underground cistern.

The Porta Torre also points to the medieval past. Its pointed arch dates from the late 13th century. In Contrada Telegrafo, the enclosing walls of the ancient city of Calacte were also discovered in what is now Caronia. The town’s history therefore brings together different periods, from ancient traces to the fortifications of the Middle Ages.

Churches and Art Between Squares and Bell Towers

The Chiesa Madre was built in the 12th century, preserves remarkable paintings and stands beside a medieval bell tower. The Chiesa di San Biagio opens onto Caronia’s main square. It houses the 1771 painting of the Descent from the Cross by Domenico Ferrandini. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio is located on the small Piazza San Francesco.

The Chiesa di San Francesco dates from around 1500. It was originally the chapel of the convent attached to the monastery of the Frati Minori Osservanti di San Francesco. The church houses the oil painting “L’annunciazione della Madonna.” Another historical point of reference is the Chiesa della Madonna Annunziata: it dates from the 12th century and was commissioned by Queen Costanza.

Watercourse, Coast and Natural Landscape

The Mulino Comune Caronia is located on the Torrente Caronia, an old watermill powered by the stream. The remains of the Ponte Aureliano are also situated on the torrente. They are regarded as a symbol of the town’s past and complement the historical picture with a structure directly connected to the watercourse.

Caronia Marina is also part of the area’s landscape profile. The coastal village offers beautiful, clean beaches. Caronia is also one of the municipalities within the Parco Naturale dei Nebrodi. Historical buildings, a coastal village and the Nebrodi’s natural landscape thus stand alongside one another as distinct focal points.

Local Character and Travel Planning

A distinctive regional touch is provided by the Sagra Porcelli e Porcini. In Caronia, it is dedicated to two typical products of the Monti Nebrodi: black pork and porcini mushrooms. The event takes place annually and promotes local products as well as art, culture and traditions. In 2025, it took place from October 24 to October 26.
