Castel di Lucio amid art, churches and old lanes

Castel di Lucio combines a dense historic townscape with contemporary art and religious buildings. The old lanes of A Vanedda, running between historic stone houses, lead through a characterful part of the village. Only the well-preserved cylindrical tower of the Castello dei Ventimiglia remains; it dominates Castel di Lucio. The forecourt of the Chiesa di Maria SS. del Soccorso also offers views of the village’s architecture and the surrounding natural landscape.

Contemporary art in the townscape

The Museo Civico Castelluzzo opened on 28 August 2021. It comprises more than 80 works representing various forms of contemporary art. Works by local artists are displayed alongside works by artists of national and international renown. The museum thus gives the town a clear cultural accent without reducing Castel di Lucio to its historic building fabric.

Art can also be encountered at prominent locations outside the museum. Labirinto di Arianna, a work by Italo Lanfredini from 1989, can be reached via a side road before the town centre and overlooks the valley and the village. On the S.P. 176 towards Castel di Lucio, Una curva gettata alle spalle del tempo, created by Paolo Schiavocampo in 1988, is the first Fiumara d’Arte artwork encountered. At the entrance to the town, Arethusa, created by Pietro Dorazio and Graziano Marini in 1989, is also located on the S.P. 176. The work turns the local Carabinieri barracks into a cultural point of reference and visitor attraction.

Churches and sacred art

The Chiesa Madre stands on Piazza Umberto I. It was founded between 1499 and 1500 on an abandoned building. Construction work continued for centuries because of ongoing structural changes, collapses, fires and adaptations to the respective architectural styles. One of the Chiesa Madre’s chapels houses a marble polyptych by Bonifazio and Antonino Gagini that encloses the ciborium.

The Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo was built between 1619 and 1624. In 1881, Salvatore De Caro decorated its vault with frescoes. Traditional religious customs such as the Quarantore are celebrated in the church in the period before Lent. The Oratorio del SS. Sacramento, formerly the Chiesa di San Vincenzo, houses an organ dating from 1792.

The Chiesa di Santa Lucia was built in the 16th century. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio da Padova contains a statue of Saint Anthony created by Giuseppe and Giovan Battista Livolsi in 1601. The church stands at the place where, according to tradition, Saint Anthony stayed during his journey through Sicily in 1217. The Chiesa di San Nicola is the oldest religious building in Castel di Lucio and was built before 1570; its bell tower was constructed between 1831 and 1832.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria la Raccomandata was founded in the 16th century as a covered cemetery for the district at that time. During processions, its image was carried on a bier with twelve small bells attached to the canopy.

Getting around the village and arrival

The Convento dei Frati Minori and the Chiesa di Maria SS. del Soccorso can be reached on foot from the main square via Via Vittorio Emanuele and several side streets. Tusa railway station on the Palermo–Messina railway line serves Castel di Lucio.

Excursions, crafts and local products

The naturalistic route Pantani-Provitina-Portella is associated with an excursion from Castel di Lucio. It is 10 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 400 metres. Castel di Lucio also preserves traditional crafts such as weaving and stonework. As part of the predominantly agricultural dairy industry, cheese and Provola are produced. The Festa di San Pietro e Paolo is celebrated on 29 June and complements the picture of a place where art, religious traditions, crafts and local products exist closely alongside one another.
