Galati Mamertino: Churches, Mountain Views and Religious Festivals

Galati Mamertino combines a town centre with a narrow, radial layout, sacred art, sweeping mountain and sea views, nature trails and religious festivals.

Historic Centre and Sacred Art

The historic centre of Galati Mamertino has a radial urban layout with narrow streets. The Chiesa Madre Santa Maria Assunta dates back to 1575 and houses a painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Agatha by Pietro Novelli. The Chiesa del Rosario contains a marble statue of the Madonna della Neve by Antonello Gagini, while the Chiesa di Santa Caterina houses a wooden crucifix by Fra Umile da Petralia.

The Palazzo De Spuches features a beautiful loggia and two portals by Montorsoli. Only ruins remain of the Arab-Norman castle on a rocky acropolis.

Views, Waterfall and Landscape

Itinerary 1 offers sweeping views of the surrounding valleys, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands. Itinerary 2 provides views of Monte Soro, at 1,847 m above sea level.

The Cascata del Catafurco is fed by the waters of the Torrente San Basilio. It can be reached on foot via a well-marked path bordered by wooden railings.

Natural Area and Ethnographic Traces

L'area del Capriolo is located in Contrada Miserella within the municipality of Galati Mamertino, at approximately 903 m above sea level. The area covers 22,750 m² and contains chestnut trees and Turkey oaks. The paths around L'area del Capriolo are suitable for environmental education and sustainable recreation; there is also a trail for people with disabilities.

Villaggio Molise is considered a typical example of a rural settlement of great ethnographic and anthropological significance. The tourist tour of the historic centre also includes the Mulino e Pastificio Etnoantropologico.

Religious Festivals and Local Traditions

During the Festa di San Basilio Magno, the statue from the church of the same name is carried through San Basilio by numerous bearers. The “vara” is decorated with traditional basil stalks and sheaves of grain. The Festa di San Giuseppe includes a procession with the statue of Saint Joseph; in Galati Mamertino, it is an annual religious and popular tradition.

The Festa dei Tre Santi is celebrated from 23 August to 26 August in honour of San Rocco, the Santissimo Crocifisso and Galati Mamertino’s patron saint, San Giacomo. According to tradition, during the Festa di San Giuseppe, the statue of the Christ Child, “u Bambineddu”, travels through the streets and visits the homes of families in Galati Mamertino.
