In the historic centre of Ficarra, the Casa della memoria is located next to the Santuario dell’Annunziata. It is dedicated to Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, the author of “The Leopard”. The Santuario dell’Annunziata also houses a polyptych painted on wood, commissioned in 1477 from Antonello da Messina as the gonfalon of the Annunziata confraternity. This provides you with a cultural introduction that closely links literature, sacred art and the historic town centre.

Museums Within the Townscape

The Museo Diffuso of Ficarra is a network of small museums spread throughout the townscape. It includes the Museo dei Giochi e dei Giocattoli Medievali, housed in the Fortezza Carceraria. The Museo la Casa del Baco da Seta reconstructs a typical 19th-century setting and presents the techniques used to obtain silk thread and to work at the loom.

Everyday culture also has its own space in Ficarra. The Museo della Ceramica d’uso in Sicilia displays everyday Sicilian utility ceramics and includes a section on ceramics in historic construction. In La Stanza della Seta, a collection of contemporary artworks provides another cultural highlight. A municipal exhibition tour is linked to four shop windows there, which can also be viewed at night.

Olive Culture and Typical Specialities

The Museo dell’Oliva Minuta is housed in a restored old cold-press olive mill. It presents the local tradition of olive cultivation and oil production in Ficarra. In addition, the Museo didattico dell’oliva “Minuta” offers a tasting workshop with a tasting of freshly produced EVO olive oil for young people and adults.

Another local speciality is Paste di Mandorle, known in Sicilian as “Pasti i Mennula”. These almond pastries are typical of Ficarra and bear a DECO designation of municipal origin. Traditionally, Pasti i Mennula are associated with the Easter period, but they are now produced all year round. This makes it possible to experience the local cuisine independently of any single festive period.

Literature, Palazzo and Events

The Centro Lucio Piccolo di Calanovella is located in the baronial Palazzo “Milio-Ficarra”. A three-day event in Ficarra includes literary walks through the old town, a procession in historical costumes featuring characters from “The Leopard”, and a dance by Angelica and the Prince. The literary connection to Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa is therefore reflected both in a permanent cultural venue and in the events programme.

For planning purposes, the different formats of the offerings are useful: museums focus on art, ceramics, silk, olives and medieval games; exhibition windows and literary formats provide additional highlights. For visits to the Museo Diffuso, opening hours are listed as Monday to Saturday, 8:30–12:30 and 15:00–19:00. The educational workshops of the Museo Diffuso are led by specialised staff.
