Fiumedinisi presents a profile in which sacred history, mountain landscapes and industrial archaeology come together. Here, the range of attractions extends from historic sites and a sanctuary to geological formations and an ethnological museum. The individual sites offer different ways of engaging with the landscape and history.
Ruins and Mountain Panorama
Castello Belvedere lies in the vicinity of Fiumedinisi. Of the site, which is considered a ruin, only the ruins of the outer walls, several interior partition walls and the imposing keep remain. The Castello has an irregular pentagonal floor plan. The hiking trail to it begins in the centre of Fiumedinisi.
Monte Scuderi is also located nearby and is one of the mountains in the area. Its summit is considered a natural terrace offering views extending from Mount Etna to the Aspromonte and from the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian Sea. This broad landscape panorama thus stands alongside the area's historic sites.
Geology and Water Landscapes
The Fiumedinisi e Monte Scuderi Nature Reserve is of geological interest due to metal-bearing mineralisations on Monte Scuderi and in the area of the Torrenti Vacco and Santissima. The Gole della Santissima are narrow gorges formed over the centuries by the waters of the Fiumara Santissima. Here, geological formations and the effects of water are clearly evident together.
Sanctuary, Festival and Pilgrimage Route
The Chiesa Maria SS. Annunziata was dedicated to Maria SS. Annunziata after its final restoration and elevated to the status of a diocesan sanctuary on 25 March 1976. The Festa di Maria Santissima dell’Annunziata takes place every year with liturgical celebrations, solemn processions and impressive religious rites. For those interested in cultural and religious history, Fiumedinisi thereby combines an established sacred site with an annually recurring festival.
The Via dei Santuari Mariani in the Anello del Nisi is an approximately 28 km circular route connecting the Santuario Maria Ausiliatrice in Alì Terme with the Santuario Maria SS. Annunziata in Fiumedinisi.
Museum, Palace and Industrial Archaeology
The Museo Etnoantropologico di Fiumedinisi displays agricultural implements, craft tools, historic photographs and rare documents. Material evidence of work is thus presented alongside visual and written sources. The Palazzo della Zecca was built in 1669 as a large government palace, in the course of intensified mineral exploration and extraction in the Fiumedinisi area. Industrial archaeology also includes the Miniere san Carlo in Fiumedinisi, with underground caves and facilities.
