Francavilla di Sicilia between the Alcantara and history

Francavilla di Sicilia combines a distinctive river landscape with archaeological, religious and museum-related attractions. If you are planning a trip through Sicily based on your interests, you will find natural features along the Alcantara as well as tangible evidence of the town’s history. Local products and the Fiera Zootecnica round out the picture with regional and community traditions.

River landscape and protected areas

In the section of the Alcantara River between Castiglione and Francavilla di Sicilia, thousands of years of erosion of the lava flows have created a series of rounded pools known as the Gurne. The unusual name is therefore directly associated with this section of the river and describes a landscape form that emerged from the interplay of water and volcanic rock.

Monte Castello lies on the eastern edge of the municipality of Francavilla di Sicilia and within the Alcantara River Park. The catchment area of the San Paolo and the surrounding area within the municipality of Francavilla di Sicilia have been declared to be of considerable public interest. The nearby area also includes Monte Pizzo and Montagna Grande. Spiaggia di Villagonia beach is likewise in the vicinity of Francavilla di Sicilia.

Museums, archaeology and churches

The Museo Archeologico di Francavilla di Sicilia, or MAFRA for short, was inaugurated on October 19, 2020. It is housed in Palazzo Cagnone, a 16th-century building in the medieval quarter of Francavilla di Sicilia. For a cultural stay, this combines a museum perspective with a historic building and the local quarter.

In the archaeological area of Contrada Fantarilli, a visible part of a settlement from the 5th century BC has been preserved. The Convento dei Frati Minori Cappuccini houses the Museo della testimonianza francescana. The Chiesa Madre of Francavilla di Sicilia preserves a pointed-arch portal dating from 1493. The Museo Etnografico is also located nearby.

Further historical destinations lie in the surrounding area: Castello di Lauria is located near Francavilla di Sicilia, as are the ruins known as Rovine del Castello di Francavilla di Sicilia. Castello di Mola is also in the vicinity. This allows archaeological heritage, monastic culture, church architecture and castles to be explored as different focal points of your tour.

Festivals and local products

The municipality of Francavilla di Sicilia promotes the Fiera Zootecnica, which takes place in connection with the celebrations of the SS. Crocifisso, the patron saint Sant'Euplio and the patron saint Santa Barbara. Local products associated with Francavilla di Sicilia include olive oil, wine and traditionally made confectionery. Alongside the landscape and history, these themes also give a trip a culinary and festive dimension.
