Leni on Salina: Nature, Island Culture and Trails
Leni on Salina can be experienced through its nature, history, trails and local traditions. If you are looking for accommodation for an individually planned island trip, you will find various points of interest here: the Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri nature reserve, historic religious buildings, archaeological traces, a black beach and an annual Tavuliata.
Churches, the Sanctuary and Early Settlement Traces
The present-day Church of San Gaetano dates from 1853. It is associated with a procession by boat that takes place every year on 7 August. Access to the church is only possible on request. The Madonna del Terzito Sanctuary is located in Valdichiesa on the island of Salina, within the municipality of Leni. It was declared a sanctuary on 8 December 1969. The present-day sanctuary dates from the 17th century and stands on the ruins of older buildings. Access to this sanctuary must also be requested in advance.
Punta Megna is located nearby, immediately south of Leni. A settlement from the Early and Middle Bronze Age can be found there, dated to the 23rd to 15th centuries BC. In Rinella, a district of Leni, a Neolithic site, together with the Castellaro site on Lipari, is also considered one of the oldest known human settlements in the Aeolian Islands. Its origins date to the middle of the 6th millennium BC.
Macchia, Forest Vegetation and Views of Monte Fossa
The Le Montagne delle Felci e dei Porri nature reserve lies within the municipalities of Leni, Malfa and Santa Marina di Salina. It mainly comprises evergreen macchia as well as dense stands of chestnut trees, oaks, pines and holm oaks. The protected area was established to preserve the natural vegetation and restore Mediterranean forest vegetation. It identifies the rare Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae) as the natural symbol of the island of Salina.
For planning your hikes, two routes of different lengths, described as moderately difficult, are particularly relevant. The 2 km Leni–Monte Fossa trail begins at the access point on Via Caserta near the primary school and leads towards Monte Fossa delle Felci. It passes through dense vegetation and is therefore shaded. The ascent is scheduled to take about 180 minutes, and the descent about 120 minutes. The 1.8 km Madonna del Terzito–Monte Fossa trail begins next to the Madonna del Terzito Sanctuary in Valdichiesa. It leads via numerous hairpin bends and several crossings of the main road to Monte Fossa delle Felci.
Rinella and the Coast
Rinella beach is small, crescent-shaped and characterized by black sand. It lies next to the small harbor where hydrofoils dock. For orientation, it helps to clearly distinguish between time spent by the water, trails towards Monte Fossa and the cultural sites in Leni and Valdichiesa.
A Tavuliata Featuring Aeolian Island Dishes
The traditional Tavuliata in honor of San Giuseppe Artigiano takes place in Leni every year on 1 May. Local dishes and typical sweet specialties of the Aeolian Islands are presented at this event. The Tavuliata notably includes a minestrone made with pasta, chickpeas and various pulses. Azienda Agricola Salvatore d’Amico is another link to local production. It is one of the oldest businesses on the island of Salina, a small family-run operation, and operates within the municipality of Leni.
Which Focus Suits Your Trip?
When choosing a hotel in Leni, you can first organize your planning according to your preferred focus. The trails of different lengths offer a concrete comparison for days focused on nature and hiking. The Church of San Gaetano, Madonna del Terzito, Punta Megna and the Neolithic site in Rinella place different emphasis on history and culture.
