Longi: Medieval Heritage, Mountain Forest and Local Tradition

Longi combines medieval heritage, sacred art, high-altitude nature and local tradition. The Castello di Longi, the Chiesa di Maria Santissima Annunziata, the Chiesa Madre, the Bosco di Mangalaviti and the Sagra del Suino Nero dei Nebrodi each add their own distinctive character. This creates a destination where historic buildings, landscapes, environmental education and activities for children, young people and adults with different travel interests come together for you.

Culture and historic features

The Castello di Longi dates back to the Middle Ages. It cannot currently be entered. The Chiesa di Maria Santissima Annunziata was built in 1857 in Piazza Generale Moriondo, after the earlier church collapsed in the landslide of 1851. It houses a marble statue of the Madonna Annunziata with gold-coloured painted details, a work by the brothers Antonino and Giacomo Gagini.

The Chiesa Madre of Longi has a bell tower from the 15th century and an organ from the 17th century.

The Bosco di Mangalaviti

The Bosco di Mangalaviti is a natural area in the municipality of Longi, within the Parco dei Nebrodi. It lies at an altitude of between 1,200 and 1,500 metres above sea level. From Longi, the Bosco can be reached via the road to Portella Gazzana. Its elevation gives the natural area a pronounced mountain character and creates a clear landscape focus alongside the historic buildings.

At the beginning of the Bosco di Mangalaviti lies Case Mangalaviti, an ancient estate and rural centre. The Sentiero Didattico at Case Mangalaviti is used for environmental education activities. Here, the woodland setting and the communication of ecological relationships come together as a distinct nature and educational theme that extends the perspective beyond simply observing the landscape.

Valley, Water and Adventure

The so-called “Stretta” di Longi is a valley crossed by rapids and waterfalls, where the two mountains appear to almost meet. Watercourses and closely neighbouring mountain slopes shape a landscape here that clearly differs from the churches and historic buildings in the town.

The Nebrodi Adventure Park offers children, young people and adults elevated platforms, bridges and treetop courses with different levels of difficulty. It is located in Bosco Soprano in Contrada Pado, about 4 km from the centre of Longi. The combination of different age groups and several levels of challenge makes the park an activity-oriented part of the local natural landscape.

A Culinary Event in January

The Sagra del Suino Nero dei Nebrodi is held in Longi every year in January. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, January is the relevant period.
