Piraino between the Hills and the Sea

Piraino is situated on a distinctive hill directly above the sea. A few kilometers south of the built-up center lies the “La Pineta” Suburban Park, an area of great natural and landscape value. An equipped area offers opportunities for outings and picnics; a viewpoint also provides panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the sea.

Churches and Historic Buildings

Beneath the Chiesa Madre e Catacombe lies a crypt containing the mummified bodies of priests from Piraino, preserved using the Colatoio technique. The church is believed to have existed as early as the Norman period and has a decorated, gilded wooden altar.

The Chiesa di San Francesco dei Minori Osservanti complex was built between 1604 and 1614. It retains parts of its walls, as well as a cloister with columns and capitals carved from sandstone.

The Palazzo Ducale was built around 1400; from the mid-17th century onward, the Denti family had the building considerably enlarged.

Towers Overlooking the Coast

The Torre Saracena was built for defensive purposes, to spot possible invaders approaching from the sea. Its strategic location offers views over a wide stretch of coastline. The Torre delle Ciavole was built around 1500 from large stone blocks on a rocky spur. As a square tower, it is an example of the defensive system built along the Sicilian coast at that time.

Outside the historic center, the Guardiola stands at an altitude of 380 meters. It offers panoramic views of the sea and was formerly an observation post equipped with cannons, whose guns were aimed at the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Ceramics and Local Festival Traditions

The Scalinata di Ceramiche is decorated with handmade ceramics by the artist Nino Ferrigno from Santo Stefano di Camastra. A walk up the staircase leads into a historical and cultural setting where you can discover local ceramic craftsmanship.

The patron saint’s festival of San Giuseppe takes place on the Tuesday after Easter and includes a procession carrying the statue of the saint. It is also known as “Martedì della Benedizione” because the fields and surrounding countryside are blessed during the celebration. At the San Rocco festival on August 16, statues of San Rocco, Santa Lucia, Sant’Antonio di Padova and Maria SS. della Trinità are carried in a procession. During Carnival, the traditional Carnevale dell’Orso parade takes place in Gliaca di Piraino, featuring floats and masked groups. At Christmas, Piraino is associated with a sacred nativity representation featuring performers in historical costumes.

Coast, Products and Getting There

The coastal town of Gliaca di Piraino has a beach. Traditional foods and products from Piraino include cheese, cured meats, honey, hazelnuts, almonds, olive oil, wine and Sicilian pastries.

When traveling from Palermo to Piraino, the route follows the A19 and A20 motorways, the Brolo-Capo d’Orlando Est exit, and then the SS 113, SP 140 and SP 141.
