Savoca Between Rock and History

Savoca lies amid the rock of a two-peaked hill. The landscape of Savoca combines a river, a stream, hills, woodland and bare rock. Water, wooded areas, elevations and exposed stone therefore jointly shape the appearance of the town. Architecture Spanning Several Centuries

The Chiesa San Michele dates from before 1250 and served as a place of worship for Castello Pentefur. Two portals in the Gothic-Sicilian style have sandstone arches. The ruins of the medieval synagogue of Savoca’s Jewish community already existed in 1408 and lie at the foot of the hill on which Castello Pentefur stands. The Porta della Città dates from the 12th century and has a pointed sandstone arch. Chiesa di Gesù e Maria and the Stations of the Cross

The 16th-century Chiesa di Gesù e Maria is the only surviving architectural testimony in Savoca to the work of the Brotherhood of the same name. Today, only the church’s enclosing walls remain; inside, valuable floral friezes in the Baroque style can be seen. Another distinctive route leads from the Capuchin monastery through the streets of the historic centre to Monte Calvario: the Stations of the Cross include stations that are partly carved into the rock. The stations in the rock give the route a tangible connection to Savoca’s landscape and historic centre.

Palazzo Trimarchi and Centro Filarmonico

The Bar Vitelli was recreated in Palazzo Trimarchi for the filming of The Godfather. In Savoca’s historic centre, the Centro Filarmonico provides cultural and musical offerings and serves as a meeting place for those interested in music and art.

Orientation and Views

Savoca’s illuminated bypass runs along the streets of the historic centre and around the castle. For orientation within the townscape, this relationship between the centre, castle and streets is particularly revealing. Pizzo di Cucco is a viewpoint overlooking Savoca.
