Spadafora: Seafront Promenade, Churches and Local Traditions

Spadafora on the Tyrrhenian coast combines the Lungomare Nauloco with several churches, the Castello di Spadafora and local celebrations.

Seafront Promenade and Practical Information

The seafront promenade in Spadafora is called Lungomare Nauloco and extends for approximately 4 km along the Tyrrhenian coast between Rometta Marea and Venetico. Stops for local public transport are located nearby. Several accessible entrances lead onto the promenade. It can be used free of charge and without time restrictions; public parking spaces are available along Via Lungomare and on the adjoining streets.

Churches with Different Features

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe is a single-nave church with a polygonal apse, round arches, Corinthian columns and an elliptical ribbed dome. It is accessible during religious celebrations. In the Chiesa di San Martino, polychrome marble altars from the 18th century, originating from the original church, preserve its distinctive furnishings. The church in Spadafora’s district of the same name was rebuilt in the 1920s and 1930s.

The Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù was built in 1939 by the engineer Barbaro from Messina. Above the high altar is a painting by Bonanno from Messina dating from 1945; it commemorates the apparition associated with the church. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine in Grangiara was built at the beginning of the 19th century and retains its original simple and essential architectural features.

Castle and Celebrations in Honor of Saint Joseph

The Castello di Spadafora is used by the municipal administration and the Pro Loco di Spadafora for numerous cultural events. The castle can be accessed free of charge on request. The patron-saint celebrations in honor of Saint Joseph take place on the Sunday after the third Thursday in July and coincide with the traditional livestock fair. During the Processione di San Giuseppe, the statue is carried through Spadafora, turned toward the sea for the blessing, and then returned to the Chiesa di San Giuseppe.

Grangiara and Regional Products

The Borgo di Grangiara is located approximately 1,500 meters from the center of Spadafora. It is accessible on foot and by car and is considered publicly accessible around the clock. Olive oil, wine and citrus fruits, especially lemons, are produced agriculturally in Grangiara. Together with the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine, this creates a distinctive focal point combining the local townscape, religious architecture and agriculture.

Activities on the Lungomare

The Parco Sportivo San Giuseppe is located directly opposite the seafront promenade. It has equipment for outdoor physical exercise and green spaces suitable for families and people who enjoy sports.
