Scillato amid the Madonie’s natural landscapes and mill history

Scillato is one of the municipalities within the Parco delle Madonie, a regional nature park. The town centre lies on a slope at the foot of Monte Fanusi, 225 m above sea level, and is surrounded by gardens, orchards and olive groves.

Natural landscapes, springs and karst

Above the town centre, the underground drainage system emerges in Contrada Sorgive at 376.68 m above sea level. It feeds the Agnello, Bosco and Golfone springs. Scillato’s limestone also tells the story of a long geological development: it consists mainly of calcium carbonate, was formed since the Triassic period and, through karstification processes, gave rise to caves, grottoes, shafts and tunnels.

Experience prehistory at first hand

At the Vallone Inferno archaeological site in Scillato, excavation campaigns have so far documented the last 7,000 years of the Madonie’s prehistory. The Museo Civico di Scillato is dedicated to Giovanni Mannino, an outstanding figure in the study of western Sicily’s prehistory.

The Archeodromo delle Madonie at Mulino Famunia suttanu, Contrada Fondaco, reconstructs two furnished prehistoric huts: one based on the settlement of Piano Vento in Palma di Montechiaro and the other on the village of Roccazzo in Mazara del Vallo. Staff accompany visitor groups, school classes and families during experimental archaeology activities. Using materials available at the time, participants can recreate prehistoric actions and techniques.

Mills and the history of water

Scillato has 13 mills, built between 1156 and 1800. Most have fallen into disrepair or have been incorporated into other buildings. Some were acquired and restored by the municipality of Scillato, although little of the ancient milling equipment remains. Mulino Rasu was the last mill to cease grain milling operations, in the 1960s.

The Museo dell’Acqua is located in Mulino Paraturi, which operated in the 19th century and was the only mill to use the Zabbara. During guided tours, the processing and extraction of the fibres are demonstrated for educational purposes. Today, Mulino Paraturi is a centre for lifelong learning and home to the Museo dell’Acqua. The museum features explanatory panels and models covering various aspects of water and its cycle.

Madonna della Catena and trails

The Santuario Maria Santissima della Catena in Scillato houses a white marble sculpture of the Madonna della Catena dating from 1570, attributed to the Gagini school. The patronal feast of the Madonna della Catena is celebrated every year on 20 August and includes a procession through the town.

When choosing your accommodation, you can consider Scillato according to the focus of your trip: natural landscapes and springs, prehistory, mill history or religious culture each offer different highlights. Scillato can be reached via its own exit on the A19 Palermo–Catania motorway. A section of the Sentiero Italia from Scillato to P.lla Bifolchi is also signposted.
