Castellana Sicula lies within the Parco delle Madonie and combines experiences of the landscape with a remarkable density of cultural heritage. The colourful modern murals have earned the municipality the nickname „Città dei Murales“. In Calcarelli, a hamlet of Castellana Sicula, the Chiesa di San Giuseppe houses an old pipe organ that is still used during services. The ceiling and walls of the church are decorated with paintings.

Art, Churches and Archaeological Traces

The Museo Civico is located within the archaeological area of Contrada Muratore. It includes an ethnographic and an archaeological section, a small collection of archaeological finds, as well as objects and tools from the local farming culture. There is also a special collection of animals that have been prepared and preserved in formalin. The archaeological section displays finds from Contrada Muratore and from surface surveys at Cozzo del Morto, Cozzo Zara, Monte Rotola Vecchia and Cozzo Re; they provide evidence of prehistoric human settlement at these sites.

The Muratore site includes a multi-lobed thermal complex with adjoining rooms arranged around a small courtyard, a high-quality paved floor and a well-preserved ambulatory. The Roman baths form a building measuring 19 Ă— 20 metres and are among the few examples from the Roman period excavated to date in Sicily. The excavations also uncovered the settlement area and the public area of a probable pagus from the Roman imperial period. A necropolis contains three hypogea carved entirely into the rock.

Further historical traces can be found at the Grotta del Vecchiuzzo, which served as a multi-family dwelling from the third millennium through the first centuries of the second millennium. At Cozzo Moro, at an altitude of 1165 metres, there are remains of inhumation graves from the pre-Roman period. The Chiesetta Madonna della Catena in Frazzucchi dates from 1909.

Hiking Trails, Cycling Tours and Natural History

Castellana Sicula offers several trails with different characteristics for hiking. The geological trail G7 „Le pietre e l’acqua“ runs from Mulino Petrolito to Cozzo Morto, combining natural-history and geological aspects with traces of human activity, and is 2.228 kilometres long. The route takes around two hours in the direction of the destination and one hour for the return journey; its difficulty level is E. Numerous trails for various activities begin in the developed area of Piano Mulino. An old, disused watermill stands there near the mountain spring.

The challenging hiking trail 553 begins in Borgata Nociazzi near Castellana Sicula. It alternates between sections through Mediterranean vegetation and wide views over the valley of the Southern Imera, leading to the Santuario Madonna dell’Alto, a religious building dating from the 15th century. The MTB3 runs from Castellana Sicula via the hamlet of Nociazzi to the developed area above Mulino Petrolito, through a beech forest to the Fontana Madonna dell’Alto and then to the final ascent to the Santuario Madonna dell’Alto at an altitude of 1827 metres.

The G8 trail „Le pietre e l’acqua“ begins in Castellana Sicula at the Centro di Educazione Ambientale next to the municipal gymnasium and runs from Tufo Gipsi to the archaeological area of Muratore. At Tufo Gipsi are the „Carcare“, structures used for the artisanal processing of gypsum. The site is particularly suitable for educational excursions focusing on natural history. The Calanchi are geomorphological structures formed by the erosion of surface water in clay-rich rocks.

Festivals, Crafts and Regional Cuisine

Local traditions are also reflected in festivals and food. During the „Manciari di San Giuseppi“ on 19 March, communal tables are set with local and typical dishes, including pasta with beans, cod, fried cardoons and Sfinge, sugared fritters. Artisanal food products include bread, amaretti made from bitter almonds, cheesecake and oven-baked cassata. Traditional crafts include baskets and carrying baskets made from willow branches and strips of reeds, as well as saddles, bisaccia bags, crochet work and lace embroidery.

The „Carnevale delle Madonie“ usually takes place on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday and includes a parade with allegorical floats and masked groups. The „Ballo della Cordella“ is associated with Castellana Sicula in August: the local folklore group performs the traditional fertility and thanksgiving dance with 24 dancers. Each dancer holds the end of a ribbon, whose other end is attached to the top of a three-metre-high pole. On the first Sunday in July, the residents of Calcarelli make a pilgrimage to the Santuario Madonna dell’Alto.

The Centro Addestramenti Sicilia - Sport Equestri offers riding lessons for all ages and levels, from recreational riding to professional equestrian sport. For travel by car, the state road SS120 connects Castellana Sicula directly with the nearby motorway.
