Terrasini: Coast, Towers and Sicilian Festive Culture

Terrasini between Seafront and History

On Terrasini’s seafront stands Palazzo d’Aumale, a 19th-century building. Don Vincenzo Grifeo had it built; later, the Duke d’Aumale acquired the building to set up wine warehouses there. Another facet of the town’s history is represented by the ethnographic collection of the Museo d’Aumale. It includes Sicilian carts, boat models and objects from material culture.

Towers with a History of Their Own

Torre Capo Rama is the oldest surviving building in the municipality of Terrasini. At the same time, it was part of the complex coastal observation system. Its circular layout is connected to the fact that it was built a century before the other towers with square layouts. Its form therefore directly points to an earlier phase of coastal architecture.

Torre Alba is also known as Torre Cala Rossa and locally as Torre Fanara; it was built in 1589. Since 2007, the tower has been open to the public and is frequently used for cultural and social events. It is therefore one of Terrasini’s buildings where historic architecture and contemporary event life meet.

Church Art and Art Nouveau

The Church of Maria SS. delle Grazie was begun at the end of the 17th century on the initiative of Baron Gazzara and expanded in the first half of the 18th century by the La Grua-Talamanca family. Inside are wooden statues of the Immacolata and the Addolorata attributed to Bagnasco, as well as a painting of the Madonna delle Grazie by Martorana.

Another distinctive aspect of the architectural history is Villa Fassini. It is attributed to the architect Ernesto Basile and is considered one of the earliest examples of the Art Nouveau style in Italy. Together with Palazzo d’Aumale and the towers, it illustrates how different eras have shaped Terrasini’s architectural identity.

Capo Rama: Limestone, Plateau and Caves

The Capo Rama nature reserve, protected since 1968, encompasses a cliff more than 30 metres high made of Mesozoic limestone on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Castellammare, as well as a flat plateau covered with Mediterranean maquis. Caves formed by marine erosion and karst processes open up along the high, rocky coast and are also visible from the plateau.

For groups and school classes, WWF organises guided visits to the Capo Rama nature reserve by prior arrangement with the reserve’s offices. This clearly defined framework is particularly relevant for jointly planned nature experiences, without reducing the character of the reserve to a single type of excursion.

The Faraglioni rise from the water in front of Praiola Beach. They are considered a natural monument and a symbol of Terrasini. The rock formations add a striking motif to the coastal landscape, while Capo Rama—with its cliff, plateau and caves—reveals the geological aspects of the surrounding area.

Festive Culture with a Sicilian Character

The Festa di li Schietti takes place every year during the Easter season. At this festival, the town’s unmarried men compete to lift a bitter orange tree weighing around 50 kg and decorated with ornaments and ribbons using just one arm. The traditional “manciata” includes castrato meat, grilled sardines and local wine. Terrasini thus combines a recurring festival date with a distinctly independent culinary tradition.
