Frigintini between gorges, cultural heritage and olive oil
Frigintini combines a clearly defined hiking route with gorges, dense vegetation, architectural heritage and a regional olive oil tradition. The “Le Vie del Tellesimo” route starts and ends in Frigintini and is 9.1 km long. This places a specific route at the center, connecting several characteristic natural and cultural sites along its course.
Le Vie del Tellesimo and the Tellaro Gorges
The “Le Vie del Tellesimo” route runs through Contrada Fegotto to Cava dei Servi and the source of the Tellesimo. The hike passes through the upper gorges of the Tellaro River in the section known as Tellesimo. One of its bends is called Cava Margione; water erosion has formed deep gorges and canyons there. Tellesimo refers to this section of the river, while Cava Margione names a single river bend.
Vegetation and rural history
The path through Cava Margione passes through dense vegetation with wild carob trees, wild olive trees, strawberry trees, wild fig trees and hackberry trees. It also includes typical undergrowth with aromatic plants such as thyme, wild mint and oregano. The plant life is therefore just as clearly identifiable as the course of the path. The same route also features the ruins of old dwellings, caves inhabited by people and the remains of an old watermill.
These remnants bear witness to the rural history connected with the river. The dwellings, caves and watermill each represent different forms of earlier life along the river, without their functions needing to be treated as one and the same. Cava Margione thus brings together natural formations, vegetation and visible traces of settlement in a narrowly defined section of the landscape.
Culture in Frigintini and Modica
Torre Trigona in Contrada Frigintini in Modica is protected as architectural cultural heritage under Decree D.A. No. 3171 of 19 July 1989. Casa Museo Appiano, a museum, is also located in the area around Frigintini. Palazzo Diquattro, Palazzo Arezzi and Palazzo Maiorana are likewise located nearby, each being a palazzo. The cultural focus therefore extends from protected architectural heritage and a museum to several palazzi.
