Ragusa: Baroque city with a multifaceted history

Ragusa is one of eight cities in southeastern Sicily that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. The entire historic centre belongs to this World Heritage Site; UNESCO recognition encompasses all of Ibla and large parts of the new town around the Church of San Giovanni. During reconstruction after the earthquake, a new urban centre was built alongside the ancient city centre. Ragusa thus combines different urban areas and is considered the highest expression of Sicilian Baroque.

Architecture and Archaeology

The historic centre is home to the Cathedral of San Giorgio, with its 43-metre-high neoclassical dome. Beside the cathedral, the Museo del Duomo displays statues, stone fragments from the church destroyed in the 1693 earthquake and other valuable relics. The Museo Archeologico Ibleo is divided into six sections: prehistory, the Greeks and Kamarina, indigenous cultures, Hellenistic centres, Late Antique and Byzantine centres, as well as collections and acquisitions. In the Kamarina section, you can see faithful reconstructions of tombs and the limestone slab known as the Guerriero di Castiglione.

The early history remains tangible even outside the museum spaces. The Trabacche hypogeum, an underground burial site with two covered burial chambers, dates from the middle of the 4th century AD. An area now laid out as a city park in the historic centre contains valuable ancient evidence of the city's oldest burial traces, including rock-cut tombs.

Castle and Panoramic Roads

The Castello di Donnafugata lies within the municipality of Ragusa, about 15 kilometres from the city, and is a magnificent aristocratic residence from the late 19th century. The Castello di Donnafugata includes the castle, park and costume museum. For a drive through the countryside, the SP 80 leads through hills and valleys covered with carob trees to the Castello di Donnafugata. Another panoramic road route connects the SP 81, which branches off from the SP 25 Ragusa Marina at Contrada Cimillà, with the SP 37 towards Camemi and back to the SP 25.

Nature along the Irminio River

The special biological nature reserve Macchia forestale del Fiume Irminio extends across the municipalities of Ragusa and Scicli and covers around 130 hectares. It protects the coastal biocoenosis, dune vegetation and the riverside ecosystem of the Irminio River. Migratory birds use the area to rest and feed after crossing the Mediterranean. The protected river and coastal landscape thus complements Ragusa's historical side with a natural area of its own ecological character.

Trails, Traditions and Regional Impressions

The Ecomuseo CARAT conveys the intangible cultural heritage of the Ragusa area through traditions, memories, manufacturing techniques and production processes, folklore, literary works and folk songs. The nature and archaeological trails are equipped with signs and information panels. They are considered trails of medium to low difficulty and are suitable for individuals, groups and families. The trails are free of charge and accessible year-round; guided tours are conducted by authorised tour guides and must be booked.

Historic Trails around Ragusa

The Madonna delle Grazie trail preserves broad mule steps that historically served to transport grain-laden mules from the plateau into the San Leonardo Valley. Along the trail are the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the municipal aqueduct and the 1837 cholera pit. On the descent to Ragusa Ibla, the short trail known as the Sentiero Belvedere offers a pleasant diversion with only slight changes in elevation and a beautiful view of Ragusa Ibla.
