Carlentini: Fortress History and Panoramic Views

A Fortress Town with a Unique History of Its Foundation

In 1551, Viceroy Giovanni de Vega founded Carlentini in honour of Emperor Charles V. Its proximity to Lentini shaped the name of the new town: this gave rise to the designation “Lentini di Carlo”. At the same time, Carlentini was incorporated as a fortress town into a broader defence project for the whole of Sicily. This project emerged against the backdrop of the fear of the Turks at the time.

Archaeology Around Leontinoi

In the hills of Leontinoi, which extend across the present-day municipalities of Lentini and Carlentini, archaeological evidence documents the history of the site from the Neolithic period to the Iron Age. In the northern part of the hill, the remains of an archaic Greek temple have been studied. The temple was probably about 9 metres wide and around 30 metres long.

In the Archaeological Park within the municipality of Carlentini, the monumental remains of Leontinoi’s South Gate and the adjoining fortifications are accessible. The Area Archeologica del Castellaccio and the Zona Archeologica di Leontinoi, both archaeological sites, are also located nearby. The Museo Archeologico di Lentini, a museum, is likewise in the surrounding area.

Sacred Places and Living Tradition

The Chiesa Rupestre del Crocifisso, an ancient rock oratory that combines Greek and Latin religious traditions, is located within the municipality of Carlentini. The statue of Saint Lucy in Carlentini already existed in 1621 and was later completely covered with silver leaf by Sicilian goldsmiths and silversmiths. The Parrocchia S. Luca is a church near Carlentini.

The city’s religious tradition includes the Scisa a Cruci. It takes place on Good Friday in the Chiesa Madre. A procession with the dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows then makes its way through the city streets.
